I think defenses are needed no matter where u base. Maybe it is something the future will bring. Walls and what not are good for the start, but some of those later raids can really mess a dood up.

All of the resources drop at the mast, so if you're standing there when it breaks and you have room in your inventory all the parts will go to you without touching the water first.
