It's a cheap tactic, but if you have stones and a hoe you could just quickly raise the ground under yourself so they can't reach you.

suggestion: craft a big shield. it helped me a lot when i was clearing crypts for the first time (i used flint dagger, but i doubt weapon matter much as long as it's leveled a bit). having armor helps..
