have You tried using the terrain raise option of the hoe to bring the bottom of the pit up to be level with the pen?

My server is configured to restart daily to check for updates, but it only restarts if there is no one connected. ... and it runs on Linux, so it only restarts when I tell it to. :-)

Hope it works for you. On a boat travel note; You only need to do a one way travel with a boat when it contains cargo. Saves many many empty boat sailing time.

Just me but I've 100% used only bronze and iron bucklers so far and been fine blocking everything in my current progression biomes - meadow, BF (inc trolls), and swamp.

Bronze buckler is fine. There isn't a standard shield at that level, and it's better than the wood shield. Iron buckler is just worse than the iron shield, though, even for parrying.

What Fzanco said is correct. Your options are more limited going to the black forest the first time, but I think that running away is a useful tactic early on so having more stamina might be useful. M..
