It's just an option if you don't want to deal with port forwarding, dynamic ip numbers and all that. The game can also host multiplayer through Steam invites or you can run the command line server app..

It.....really isn't that bad. Haven't had issues, but then I tend to farm and upgrade equipment a little before exploring. Plus fire arrows aren't that hard to get and they kick ass in the swamp.

I populated my world with 2 star wolves by harpooning them and then towing them through the water with my longboat. Never did run into a serpent I bet the 2 star wolf would have kicked its butt.

They can be loaded onto boats by building out a platform and knocking out the floor below them, but it's risky. Harpoon and friendly fire mode is the simplest approach.

You can't take a character back to pre-H&H servers once they've stepped through the update but there's been no intentional progress wipes.

For tree seeds specifically, it appears they are randomly generated as you cut the trees down, not based on whether the area has been explored. I haven't tried for acorns, but Birch seeds have dropped..
