Besides exploring the map. Go to https://valheim-map.world/ then enter your seed. Check the box of what you want to find. Then you'll get the exact locations.

I found him with the bag icon appearing on my map—the range is fairly generous.

Do it the old fashioned way, sail around, he is always in the black forest, and an icon of a bag will appear on the map when you get even remotely close.There are at least 10 merchants on your map rig..

Dropped items outside of workbench radius despawn within about 2-3 game days. Items dropped into 2m or deeper water despawn within a much shorter period, and will do so even in workbench range.

They do indeed despawn if dropped out of range of a 'claim' item (like workbenches, fires, forges, etc...there's a bunch of items fall into this category that prevent enemy spawn / item despawn...chec..

You just need to drop things you want to disappear out of range of any workbench or forge. They'll eventually disappear after some time.
