If you host the game, you dont need server.

Yes, if you want your friends to be able to play your world while you are not online, you have to do a dedicated server that is persistently up. You don't have to buy it if you can learn to set it up ..

all you have to do is build an island off the main island. I prefer building on a very small plains and expand out and you can have a nice garden. 4 corners of workbench. raids are nearly NON existent..
