Grab it really fast and keep running, use dev commands to kill him, or have another player enter your world and kill it for you.

Workbench does not prevent the growing but it needs to be plain dirt no path. That's what the "path" feature is good for in the hoe setting, it prevents grass from growing.

Yeah, the point is that the game wants you to explore via boat. There are bypasses:World switching orUse mods.

One dev wanted portals with no restrictions, another one wanted no portals at all. This was the compromise and it's not likely to change. Go ahead and world hop or mod it.

Once I get the iron pick axe I sneak into the mountain to get obsidian for the workbench upgrade. I use troll armor until silver.

lvl 4 max, if you explore a bit and go as far as finding some obsidian in mountain chests you can upgrade your workbench to lvl 5 and get it fairly soon.

I think it can go up to T4?You need to build the workbench upgrades that correspond. If you go tot he upgrade tab it will flash a number telling you the number bench required and mats.
