For me planting them was only possible in mistlands.

There's really no point in punishing yourself with grinding all of that stuff again that you lost due to technical issues. +1 for spawning

I imagine things like spires of black volcanic rock, lots of lava spouting, rock creatures, maybe a flaming lizard boss. And the whole biome cloaked in black ash where you need an "ash light"..

Its random, but sounds like you are on track, get out in the ocean where the biome indicator changes, and storms are better. Try making some noise.

apparently there are 2 spawn locations, a regular location and increased random locations during storms, the regular location will spawn without a storm n worth marking, apparently

According to the wiki serpents only spawn in full ocean biome at night or in storms. Also their spawner has a 1000s cooldown so you shouldn't recheck any particular spot more than once every 17 minute..

Flooring wont work as a roof for rain, you need actual roof pieces to prevent water damage.

rain cant destroy anything. It can only degrade it to 50%. Whip out you hammer and repair it. Everything is fine.

Are you constantly moving? Grab a tail wind at night - during a storm is better still - and just keep going. Keep an eye out, chances are at speed they won't agro, or at least won't catch up.
