The safest way is to dig a trench around an area. I usually do this when I make a base next to the black forest. Trolls can't cross it and you can shoot them with arrows. Watch out for flying rocks. Y..

Shoot them in the belly. They take more damage there and your bow shots can stagger them if they haven't spotted you yet.

Crude bow and a bunch of wood arrows. Just keep shooting and backing up.

I use better wisplight on Nexus. It doubles the wisp range by default, but you can set it up to increase it further. There are other mods out there too because this is a popular request.

There are a few different mods just have to search for them. The MistBeGone on Thunderstore mods will remove it entirely.
