There is no starving. If you don't feed them, or they can't reach each other, they won't breed.

I haven't had an issue with my 100 plot farm. I get the right amount.. 1400 barley plants is literally insane.. you could make 87 each of fish wraps, blood pudding and lox pies.. one yield is 36 HOURS..

Are you maybe planting them too close together so that some plants wither and die?

this just happened to me, all my items are gone. I lost over 2 hours of progress

I personally like to build near water.. think of it as one less directions that enemies can come from.

Have you checked "The Forest". Has fighting, crafting and somewhat of a story and quests.
