I use Gportal. I rarely have even a small bit of lag. Setting it up was really easy especially if a guy like me with moderate computer skills had little problem.

If you can walk to the approximate area you can find the alter and click the Vegvisir located there and that will put it back on the map again.

My experience with the few times this has happened to me is that if you can find one of the vegvisirs that points to the marker you deleted, then interacting with it again should restore the marker.
