They have stated the intent that there are going to be resources (other then metal) that you will have to go out exploring for. Map pins for thistle, berries, and mushrooms will give you a huge amount..

I have to say, hiding the fishing pole behind the merchant isnt a design decision I support.by the time you get it, you can craft better food. and by the time you can cook it, you also ahve better foo..

Not being able to craft a fishing pole at the start of the game is kinda daft, some seeds you can easily finish all 5 bosses before you find the merchant.
