I think you can fix the game to avoid the events, but I'm not the one to tell you how.

you'd get both the event from before killing first boss, and the events after killing elder.

No you would still move forward with the events. In your example, if you kill the Elder you would start getting the swamp events even if you ignored the 1st boss. You would also still get the 1st boss..

I find that if one has just a shield selected and you use unarmed, that it causes more damage then with out shield. Once you have leveled unarmed up to around 80 and using a shield you can cause allot..

I wouldn't bother. Damage output is just too low, especially later in the game. Good for messing around with poor Greylings, Necks and Boars, but not much more.
