I don't think you can toggle off just the minimap alone but there's a key to hide the UI. I think it's F3. You won't see your quick access item bar though, IIRC.

Much easier to use fire arrows on a troll though. Easy to get resin from trees and graylings and feathers from birds. Hunting birds for feathers is a good way to get your bow skill up in the process.

Trolls can be killed with a lvl 1 crude bow and wood arrows. Kite the troll through woods, which slows it down. I've done it several times. You probably need about 20+ arrows.
