There are a few items that will prevent spawning of enemies, not only workbenches. camp fires, bonfires and wards will do that as well. I think there's more stuff that does it. I always use workbenche..

I disagree with the fire only needs an exit. It is easy to make fires in a building with exits and still have the fires go out.
