Same thing happened to me twice, but I had alt-F4'd right after I died both times so I was partly to blame. Still, it seems the game saves your player inventory at a different point than it does grave..

Find a flesh pile spawner and just keep killing the spawns, you'll eventually get elite draugers and hence your trophy

Troll armour works fine so I'd imagine root armour would be slightly better, use bonemass and melee when you get the chance cause you get more damage in that way

Mountain caves are cool, found 2, one was much deeper than the other. Not sure about the range. But they are not really like a dungeon crawl, similar in scope to the other dungeons in game.
