You can, but they keep trying to walk off the boat if they detect enemies to fight, so keep far enough away from shores and flee from any serpent as fast as you can.
When we did it on our server the boat also kept taking dmg from the Lox just standing on it so we had to land 2 times to repair the ship.

When I pet one the game just say: "Lox Loves you" there is no "follow or stay" like with the wolves.

Walk it on the ship and try to keep it still. Better if someone else rides it on and just sits on it. Then it won't strut around on its own.

At worst when on your boat, harpoon the Lox and go with him swimming behind, it'll be slow, but its not an issue since Mobs/pets do not loose stamina when swimming, so they can't drown.

Also, I dont think this solution with harpooning them from a boat will work. They will become frightened and run/swim around, draining your stamina.
Make a ramp to the boat and try to push them in. And don't clutter them in... transfer them one by one at the slowest speed. This is what i did, but it wasn't a big distance.
If you run into a serpent, they will go agro and possibly destroy your boat or just jump off the boat and you will have to leave them in the middle of ocean.
You are risking losing them no matter which way you decide to transport them. So plan your way carefully. Stay close to the coast, but not too close. If you must sail over the ocean, wait for nice weather and do it only in daytime.

i moved a couple of loxes recently and the harpoon method is crap. the best is to make a platform so you can ride a lox and place it on your longship but it you need to have the lox head out of the boat because during travel it keeps bitting it or crushing it with 60-80 damage eatch time. also avoid to be close to an enemy mod because lox will get out of the boat and attacking it

Then I can have pets but I cannot use them.
Wolves die too easily and Loxs cant be transported. Great

loxes can be transported but its not easy. and wolves can kill enemy mods but you need a lot of wolves for strong enemies. and what is your point? if you want to be a general try other games to make an army from tamed animals...

I haven't tried lox, but I did it with boars. I'll assume the same.

And like someone said, avoid enemies at all costs cos they will get over the boat side.

I'd suggest only using the paddle. The boats jump too much if they go any faster and the lox has a far greater chance of clipping through and/or damaging the boat.

And set off at the start of day, preferably a sunny one. Night and rain increase chances of serpents, as well as waves.

And watch him how he dies not finishing work, I have seen more than once how the globules massacred even 2-3 loxes at time.
