I guess my only real choice is to plink draugr with arrows, because melee combat is going to get me wrecked.

Those spawners in the swamp are a high priority target. Keep your eyes open and shoot them from a distance. I'll normally start my exploring by avoiding them until you get the upgraded food items, Once you have that, then work on clearing out the spawners. They are always two drauger one skeleton spot. If far enough away they won't spawn anything and you can destroy them safely.

You don't want to fight the drauger there and get a two star archer spawned ... they are deadly.

again as others have said, its easy to get deterred if you are trying to rush into situations you aren't yet prepared for. good luck and by Odin's will you shall be victorious! :)

no as in not needed as you can progress the entire game by yourself.

Hugin tells you to hunt the forsaken, and shows you the stone that points out where Eikthyr is, and usually its close.
Its logical to assume you would hunt the first boss, which nets you the pickaxe.

While it's easier with other people in most contexts, the game can be played solo. Like Dark Souls it's hard because you get thrown against stuff you can't evenly match until you've progressed quite a ways. The highest (current) stuff is still a threat even when you have the best gear. Early stuff is not even able to scratch you, it seems.

It's a game about survival and challenge as you earn your way to Valhalla. It's supposed to be hard to shape you into a warrior worthy to sit beside Odin. Think of it as training.

What makes you think its impossible? Too hard? I didn't think it was particularly hard at all to beat the whole game solo.

Its only too hard if your going into Biomes without gearing up first. Takes a bit of patience. Once you get a cauldren things get much easier. Need 20 tin for that. Tin is along the coast in black forest. Usually trolls there, once you get 1st bosses power. You can always activate it and then should be able to outrun trolls. Of course you need a smelter so 5 cores at least, and 5 more for a kiln.

Actually the very beginning may be hard. Getting cores is hard at first. The polearm is good in burial chambers. Stagbreaker can be used before entering a room, that is a bit cheesy. But if you want it easier, there you go.

If your patient, you can plink Trolls about 10-12 times with a crude bow. Keeping out of their reach. Stamina foods is better for this. Troll armor will take you as far as beginning of swamp.

Always get the rest buff. Soon as its off, build a fire and sit down for 30 seconds and you get 8 more minutes of rested both. That has faster regen and 50% bonus to leveling skills.

Same happening to me, but in black forest, this game is brutal!
