Bonemass Location / Golems

Heres a two-for-one...

1. I've found two bonemass locations on my map but they are DEEP in plains territory. I imagine its a swamp nestled in the plains but the plains are way too tough for me right now. So, if I hit up more swamps on the other areas of the map, will it give me another location? Or is two the max? I only saw 2 for The Elder.

2. Elementals. Holy cow. As above, I haven't beaten Bonemass, I'm putting it off, but am finding I'm doing fairly well taking on the Mountains. The wolves are easy if they dont come at me in packs and stun-lock me, and the drakes are surprisingly easy. But the golems are really giving me trouble. They do INSANE damage and they knock me back, and when I charge back in to get a hit, they hit me again. I'm wearing iron armor and maxed iron sword, with 76 sword skill. I can take them down with a lot of fancy footwork and a lot of luck, but its still a really, really tough fight. Any tips here?

A helpful golem backed me up during a 'You Are Being Hunted' event last night, then kindly granted me his crystals.

Since the Mistlands update, you have to be careful of their knockback. Unless it's been patched, you can end up creating a grave marker at the bottom of the mountain if you get hit too close to the edge and get hit.

I think that was my first death after the Mistlands update. I wasn't even fighting the golem. I was just working my way around him and got too close. He hit me in the back, and next thing I know, I'm flying without wings!

Counterpoint; They are a renewable source of crystal, Crystal bits do not respawn in caves.

Would be nice if they occasionally dropped silver too, I mean, they visibly have bits of silver in them and sticking out of them in the case of the stabhands variant.

The weapon to beat bonemass with works great on golems. as Tangoblue mentions:

BUT what you want is to parry and then pickaxe. I was the same with like "why is pick good here" till i started parrying, then it goes a bit faster than mace. (ps: just dont parry with pick ofc)

Also golems have peculiar attack patterns, you need to learn when on parry they have very short stagger and when its very long. You want to focus on parry the attacks that give long stagger and dodge the combo ones. Then the fight gets pretty easy.

Or leave them in peace, they cant follow too far and they suck aggro from drakes, or even wolves. They are more useful alive tbh, as there is tons of crystals in caves.

Golems are OK. You can handle them if you are careful. You need an iron mace as golems have no weaknesses and are resistant to many damage types (like piercing from arrows). There are 2 types of golem one is right handed the other is left handed. Dodge until you can figure out which hand the golem uses and then dodge toward that hand on subsequent attacks. If you can get to his side you can get in 2 good swings before he can turn around.

Golems have become to me what the Trolls were when I first started. Scary at first, but once you realize their predictable attack patterns and work around them, they're pretty easy to take down, as long as you dont get careless.

There are 2 golem type. Stabber and smasher. Both have an aoe attack, and a quicker attack that can be parried for a generous stun. Smasher aoe is coming when it raises both arms. Dodge. If just its left arm goes up this is what you parry. Use iron mace combo or power attack. The stabber one has a spiky arm, if he does a big torso twist wind up get ready to dodge the aoe. When he pulls back his spiky arm for a thrust this is what you parry on him. Smack em up. Upgraded iron buckler parries them just fine.

I've kidnapped a golem and put him in a pit and built a house over top; I have named him butthole and he is my prisoner.

I use him for target practice with the frost staff to boost my elemental magic skill.

When it comes to Stone Golems...Parry and pickaxe them to death....no I'm not kidding. They're weak to pickaxe ⛏️ damage and blunt damage works well too. Gl hf

I used to think the pickaxe thing is a meme, but it isn't. Golems are not just weak, they are "very weak" and take double damage from picks – which totals to quadruple damage when they are staggered.

Just make sure you parry their faster attack and counterattack after that, it seems like their heavier attack, while possible to parry, doesn't allow them to become staggered for as long time. You may not have enough time to swap between shield set and pickaxe (and back) in time with the shorter animation.

That's the actually perfect way of dealing with them, because

1) you want to save all of your pick durability for the actual mining :Owlcat_wink:
2) it's much better for you to have a mace and shield in your hand in the event a wolf or some other critter jumps at you from behind the staggered or destroyed golem

There should be more than two Biomass altars... I'm aware of four on my world and there's probably 1-2 more.

For the other problem, you'll want an iron mace and a good parrying shield. Iron buckler and maybe even banded shield, fully upgraded, should be able to parry and stagger them.

If you don't wish to create another iron tier weapon, you can go for Frostner. Best value weapon in the game right now... though, if you have max upgraded iron sword, it may not actually matter which you use. Either way, silver shield should be able to parry them from the get-go without any upgrades, at least with average blocking skill...

And you'll obviously need good food so you don't get staggered yourself and destroy your parry. Golems deal 110 pierce or blunt damage depending on their arms.

I have had a bonemass surrounded by plains and an unscalable mountain.

You'll need the onion seeds and the wolf meat from the mountains. You can sneak slowly through the plains. You have to watch out for deathsquitos and shoot them from range with your bow. You have to watch for an avoid Lox but they have short perception ranges and its easy to sneak past them without alerting them. That leaves listening. If you hear squishing but don't see any growths or tar pits they are behind the rise that you can't see over. Give that rise a wide berth and listen for the giggling of the fulings. If you hear that you'll need to skirt that area too.

The other reason golems are good is because they spawn near abandoned buildings or silver veins and chests in the abandoned buildings are where you'll can find onion seeds (they are rare though my first play through it took me 6 abandoned buildings to find my first onions seeds.) If you see a golem and there is no building there is a silver vein nearby. You can try digging around trying to find it without a wish bone but sometimes you can see part of a silver vein protruding from the terrain if the peaks are especially sharp.

Something like that can provide you with enough silver to build a silver shield. With a silver shield you can stand up to a fuling as long as you are one on one with them which makes sneaking through the plains to get to bonemass easier.

Use the secondary attack of the sword against golem preceded by a parry, assuming you have a good shield or buckler. It probably doesn't do as much damage as a blunt weapon due to their resistances, but it only takes a few hits, and, if you're going to use sword you want to practice that attack as well.

FWIW, you can 1-shot fuling easily with that attack, which would make getting through plains much easier.
