Early game building help
Hi all, I've just started the game very recently and I'm trying to NOT read any guides etc. to avoid spoilers, but there's one thing I can't figure out.
If someone could let me know, without spoilers, HOW to use the snapping function when building, I'd be immensly grateful.
No matter what I do, I don't seem to be able to build things so that they snap to / join with other already placed items.
HOW to build a fence without gaps?

This^^ The other fence does. If you are talking about the animal pen looking fence, the horizontal bar one, there is not a snap point.

Thanks everyone for your input.
I wasn't able to play for a rather long time and will try to get back in the mood this month.

Smoke particles need a full square of space to vent sideways. If smoke is building up and putting out the fire, or going where you don't want it to go, keep that rule in mind. Fires also need overhead roof when it rains.
If the snap points aren't where you want them try putting down a beam or half-beam and snapping to that. Sometimes a temporary ladder helps you to get at the right angle when building tall.

I think you're worrying too much about spoilers. At least at this point there aren't really any spoilers to worry about. It's all laid out at the beginning: You died and have to earn your way into Valhalla by killing renegade bosses. That's it.
So you can read a whole lot of guides, especially beginner ones, without having to worry about ruining a story.
There are other things that could ruin that first wow moment. If you have not already seen them in screen shots or forum post.
Let me know if you would like a bit of in game help or someone to venture with. My wife and I play together, and I think we are around your age. I also have a dedicated server that I can start a new map on.
*Can use Discord or Teamspeak

Just wait... the monsters can and will smash up those cute little fences. The early monsters mostly just suck at it, is all.

I don't think I've made a ladder yet. Do you mean like the "portable steps" thing?
I guess I need to practice the snapping. So far, I haven't been able to build much. I found some abandoned houses and moved in...
The houses ARE abandoned, right? When I make a new game, it's private, and I'm not playing on a public server and stealing someone's home? Right?

yea, the world is private unless you tick the "launch server" option.
snapping get weird when you get more in depth, as door frames add three snap layers where a wall by default has only one. You are better off making solid walls then cutting the doorframe out after.
Also your fine snapping control gets better the closer the camera, so you might need in some instances to scroll camera in, then take out hammer to build as you can't change camera when holding the hammer.
Finally, in some hard to reach angles, you can use the "sit" option to lower your camera angle to help snap things underneath others if you are having problems :)
edit: forgot to mention just in case, by default snapping is on, holding the snapping button turns on free place. at one point I don't think that was the clearest but i think it's been clarified on the GUI now

Thanks all, I practiced and manage to snap my roof pieces perfectly. (So perfecly I died from smoke inhalation, but, eh).
It looks like the fences really do not snap. But monsters ignore them anyway so I guess they aren't very useful.

You simply need to point your mouse cursor onto the edge of the already existing building piece in order to snap additional build items to it. I dont know if that is possible with the "field fences" (if you mean those) so good luck with them (my field fences always look a little bit run-down but i dont care). Most building pieces cause little to no snapping problems if you know how to do it (and if you dont want to build complex, intersected building parts).

Ladder and Hoe is very useful when building. Fence without gaps will be possible a little further in to the game if not the hoe can do the job for you.
