Clothing should not take up inventory slots when equipped.
An extra window of some extra slots on the side of the inventory screen designated for clothing would be a good option.

I so totally agree, it would be nice to have more space. Especially now with the mistlands foods, and the different weapons. I like to be prepared cause I just never know where I'll end up .

We just used Valheim+ to give us 2 more rows of inventory space and multiplied every stack size by 10. We chose to only let encumbrance limit our inventory, which we didn't change.

This subject has been beaten to death since the first day the game came out. The devs apparently refuse to address it and/or don't care. For now there are a couple mods that help. That is your only recourse at the moment.
It has been addressed, the dev response at the time was: no intention to add paper doll/dedicated equipment slots, nor expand the default inventory space.
They serve no real purpose. It's just another screen clutter for the inventory ui.
Let's also address the fact that when games go from unified inventory to split you tend to actually lose total inventory space, because if they didn't remove slots to make room for the equipment only slots, all it effectively did was add more inventory space.
Majority of the players will prefer the unified inventory instead of having inventory space removed for equipment only. You can run around naked/lesser equipped by choice if you want more free space, an option not available with paperdoll.
And for the argument of "Why would they take away inventory space to make up for the paper doll?" Why would they not?, you asked for dedicated equipment slots, not more inventory space, and the devs have also responded to the request for larger inventory space.
The response was use the cart for now, and they were work shopping the idea of have equipped bags either to the player or to a tamed animal like the lox, but flat out expanding inventory was rejected.

We did the same on ours.. but.. 1 extra row and increased stacks to just an extra 25% but increased starter weight capacity by 50 and and extra 50 from the belt to offset the weight of our armor and weapons.
More people should be using this mod. The fact that I can craft from storage boxes is literally a game changer and it auto fills kiln, furnace and blast furnace.. it's so nice.

I Wish there would be backpacks and vests to hold more inventory but there is the matter of retrieving it once dead. Think about it.
Going on naked corpse run to fetch full inventory? Think about spending some time at your previous tombstone, with all those enemies. Why? Because upon retrieving your tombstone, you must put the gear back on. Wield weapons, wear clothes. That's going to take some time!
There could be options to either prioritize loot or gear, in the settings.
How would you solve this? And if player does not want different slots and thinks this is good?
BTW; I heard there are mods

I am always interested when this topic comes up again.
Inventory slots are just that, inventory slots, and in this game it seems they represent the 'whole' of what the player an carry on them in any fashion, be that worn, wielded or packed.
So what the OP wants it just another row of inventory added. Would it matter if it was off to the side or in some newly designed paper doll? The affect is the same; adding inventory slots.

No it's not the same. Have dedicated slots opens up space in ur inventory. Adding another row of slots wouldn't change this.
Example. If there was dedicated gear slots u would then free up these slots. Meaning u can pick up more items when ur not maxed on ur weight limit.
The weight of gear with dedicated slots can still count towards the total max carrying weight. Which gear already does but takes up usable space in the inventory.
Inventory grids like this are ment to show u what is in ur bag/inventory. Not what ur carrying over all.

Yes it would, it's a psychological thing. So what the OP wants it just another row of inventory added. Would it matter if it was off to the side or in some newly designed paper doll? The affect is the same; adding inventory slots.
If it's on equipment slots you know those just take equipment.
If it's on inventory slots, even if you would gain more slots compared to dedicated slots, it's still slots lost to equipment.

You put on pants, they have pockets, that you can carry thing in. Often more than one pocket.

Note that the OP is talking about clothing - as in that thing the devs are thinking about putting into a future update - not armor.

It is pretty weird there is no equipment screen while having limited inventory slots, isn't it?
Usually you see one or the other, but both...?
