Level 3 troll armor enough for swamp?
Im not grinding for bronze armor set at all. I have level 2 bronze axe, level 2 bronze mace, level 2 bronze buckler, level 3 finewood bow, meads, good food, good various tools upgraded, and full set level 3 troll armor.

Bronze armor is a pointless resource sink. Max out that troll and stay up on your dodgy-dodge game. Honestly, I think bronze is more of a liability in swamp due to the movement speed / stam debuff.

Do I have to max the troll armor to level 4? 3 is already above bronze starter armor

Not have to, but if you can, do so. Your gear should always be as buff as possible and grinding out the mats you need for that final upgrade is super easy as Rhapsody mentioned. Another way to think about this is, every death buffed equipment prevents is time you save from having to regain lost levels. Some skills take 20 minutes of constant use to get a single level. Things to consider.
Do you have to > no. Will it decrease the odds of you dying when you eff up? Yes.

AFIK, you need iron and obsidian to max troll armor. Level 3 should be good enough if you're careful.
I do level 3 troll or bronze, whichever one I feel like grinding, although I disagree on the protection vs mobility in swamps. Everything in the swamps moves slow, but you have to be able to fight in close quarters, so I think bronze gives you a bit of an edge.

Why are you lying to this man?
Drauger Elite can sprint and they don't lose movement speed through water
Skeletons also pass effortlessly through water
Wraith can fly and are thus immune to the effects of water AND terrain
When moving through swamps, if you take a bad line and end up draining your stam wading through water, they will run you down no problem. To keep this from getting into a debate on play style preference, if you are more comfortable when you're moving so you can run in and out of situations or navigate difficult terrain for longer periods of time = Troll armor. If you want to be able to take hits while fighting in the swamp (WHY DO THIS?!?!) Bronze / Heavy...

The game can be done with no armour, though I wouldn't recommend it.
Slow heavy armour is a good option when you don't know what to expect, you can't manoeuvre or run away the same but an unexpected heavy blow is less likely to kill you - exactly what you want in order to not die from something unexpected.
Light armour is better once you know what to look for and can avoid getting hit in the first place.

In my experience, I found that I didn't need to use caution with armor until Mistlands. Eventually I got tired of dying and switched to my MaxyPad. My levels thanked me. Up till then, Troll > Root > Fenris was where it's at.

You can upgrade Troll to level 4 with troll hides and bone fragments, not sure where iron or obsidian comes into the picture.
Yeah, you can do the swamp in Troll armor of any level. Just realize you're a little more squishy and your strength is mobility. Always be aware of your surroundings, keep your food up, avoid getting the attention of too many mobs at once, you'll be alright. Don't go in the swamp at night at this stage, that's asking for trouble.

I think the level 4 troll armour requires a level 5 workbench (hence, the iron and obsidian). Then a person can upgrade the troll armor to level 4 with troll hides/bone. You can upgrade Troll to level 4 with troll hides and bone fragments, not sure where iron or obsidian comes into the picture.

Lying?
I've played this game enough to know that you can run away from just about anything anywhere in any armor, and draugr only move fast if you get near them. Even then they only do it in spurts between their dance moves.
Archers are more of a threat, and elite in the crypts where (like I said), it's tight quarters.

Exactly. Level 4 bronze only requires iron, but, once you get iron, why would you upgrade either unless you don't plan on making iron armor (did someone say Fenris armor :-)?

Yes, but we're talking to a new player here. It can take time to build that confidence and know where / when you can pull this off, especially as they're mastering stamina management. The 'wet' debuff and 'cold' debuff can be a rude awakening to someone just starting out.
To say things in the swamp don't move fast isn't exactly accurate. Relative to how quickly you can get through the swamp if you take a bad line and get bogged down (a reasonably common scenario for those new to the swamp), they do move pretty fast.

Troll is perfectly fine if you are careful. And if you are not careful then bronze won't save you.
Use the hoe to make paths and you will do little to no swimming. And if you are slowing down enough to make a path, you are less likely to blunder into trouble. The sound of the hoe might bring them to you, but it's always safer to have them come to you than the other way around so that they aren't standing on your tombstone later.

It's so cheap to upgrade, there's no reason to max it out.
