Impregnable base? What for?
I've never felt the need to build any moats and I've never lost a building to any raid event.
I did lose a tower to Yagluth's meteor attack and that was quite spectacular, but that's different ;)

I think it is as intended. I don't mind having a safe base if you put the work into it. Be kind of a pain to be constantly repairing and rebuilding things. Especially for those people who like the building aspect of the game.

i just use a 1 X 2 exterior stone wall with an interior wood wall

I've never had to repair any building due to a raid event...Raids are directed at me and not my buildings. Therefore, I don't hide inside or behind my buildings. I go out and kill the raiders and wrap up the event nice and quick ;)

My main base is on a small island so I have zero concern for raids. I get notices and the area on the minimap goes red, but there is no land that doesn't have spawn preventing items coverage, so nothing ever shows up.

They just updated the enemies AI so it now attacks structures as well ,,, not just you.

In fact people are saying the will run right past you and start attacking buildings and stuff.

I mean that is fine, Play however you want to play. It's all good,
