Does this also apply to solo mode, no server, just local save data?
I've dug out a fairly big island and the highest instance count for me is 4300. Now the base itself is not huge but is has a lot of detail to it, and I did do a fair amount of terrain editing.
I wonder where my limit is. I still haven't seen any fps drops in and around my base.
An other base that I built on on a different map has a base three times the size. Instance count over there is also 4300?
Not sure how this works.

I think the general consensus is that 10000 instances is the max you should render. The issue is known by the dev's, and they are saying its an easy fix, so it should be better sometime in the near future. The issue is, is that the dev team is like 5 people so the timeline for a fix on top of the rest of the development is kinda sketchy.Originally posted by AdventChildVII:as my town gets bigger an bigger ive noticed a slow decrease in fps so i went on to a singleplayer map and flattened an area the size of walmart and BOOM fps goes downnnn.

You can check the instances you are rendering and calculating by pressing f2 at any time in game. IME, it doesn't apply to things you cant render, so I guess you don't need to worry about mining so long as your sufficiently far from your main base.

Should mention this: Each "chunk" of terrain is one instance. Basically, every time you use the hoe, cultivator and the pick to terraform the environment, it adds more instances, even if your removing terrain. Its not deleting instances, its saying "Ok don't render this instance, render THIS one instead" so its always calculating the main map, and changing it to the new version you're makingOriginally posted by Varagonax:I think the general consensus is that 10000 instances is the max you should render. I've flattened a large area with a moat, and my fps always drops near it but rises away from it.Originally posted by AdventChildVII:as my town gets bigger an bigger ive noticed a slow decrease in fps so i went on to a singleplayer map and flattened an area the size of walmart and BOOM fps goes downnnn.

What I wonder is if the devs somehow never noticed the problem themselves, or just decided it wasn't enough of a problem to put off the initial release? I dunno, maybe they all have super powerful computers or something, but for me, even a small house on some terraformed ground and my normally 60-ish framerate was noticeably lower in my house specifically. Then I added a carrot patch and it got a little worse. If they played their own game, surely they must have noticed the same thing?

a) It's early access. b) a small team that, at the time of development, probably didn't have much resources to do lots of testing c) the huge player numbers after EA release introduced so many more variables - different hardware setups etc. So it exposed the problem. c) Unity is known to underperform when the game has some sort of landscaping. Give them time, they will fix it. Valheim two years ago used to look way different than it does now so this is just the beginning of the journey.Originally posted by Wridian:What I wonder is if the devs somehow never noticed the problem themselves...

I still get at least 30 FPS minimum at ~15,000 instances, but I haven't built anything extensive enough to create 19,000 yet - I guess that will be my next goalpost for my castle town :)

Those are all valid points, I wouldn't even be super mad if they knew the problem existed as of launch but went with it anyway. I'm just curious if the developers had personally noticed the problem or not, is all. Seems like the issue doesn't impact everyone equally, so maybe they all had systems that handled the instance problem better than most?

I belive the devs said they wanted to create a game more akin to Zelda, then ARK. So they might just have not expected all of us to be so much into building...Originally posted by Wridian:I'm just curious if the developers had personally noticed the problem or not, is all. big cities was not intended for this game , They intended for many smaller bases linked together by portals .

But it's not just cities. I have a house that barely fits a bed, a workbench, and couple chests. Additional stuff like the furnace is lining the walls on the outside, with minimal teraforming around it and a modest carrot patch. And even that makes thing about 20fps lower when I'm there.
