Why build floors over dirt?

In early game, for a one-story wood house, is there any disadvantage to using the dirt without flooring? Are the floors just cosmetic in this situation?

I haven't tried it yet but I am hoping the black marble and dark iron chest look as good together as the wood above.

yeah it seems better to just use walls + roof in the start. then rebuild a new place or reserve a location/building area.

Edit: Had just enough to do a small sample. Its certainly good enough for a workshop area. Not quite as attractive as the wood, but the white-grey stone was so bad with the dark chests, its tons better than that.

If doing ultra compact builds, you can floor over holes that contain annoying things like workstation upgrades, chests, or the like.

Shamelessly going to steal that chest in the floor thing.
I agree that is an awesome space hack.

Floors definitely help keep everything level, if thats an issue. My ocd starts to flip out when walls and whatnot dont meet up properly

you can build framing for the floor tiles if it bothers you so much. can even build a wooden foundation(until you get to stone) and thats damned near modern housing.

Sometimes It's actually better to do dirt floors. Fire doesnt exactly mix well with wooden flooring, so dirt (or something like stone) is preferred for the hearth of the house anyway (just remember to make a chimney/flue as well, smoke indoors can be a problem). Otherwise the main advantage to flooring is evening out the terrain, which is usually more of a concern in the early game before you can just, you know, do that yourself.
