probably "climbed" it like a hill. they dont see dirt walls as actual walls, just regular terrain.

I see videos and screenshots of trolls trapped in earthen walls pretty regularly. The walls do need to be 'landscaped' to be as vertical as possible or they and all the other mobs will climb them.

I often 'trim' the sides of my earthen walls to get that optimum angle too. In this case the troll was alone and it was just a coincidence that the trees blocked my view after I shot him when he was standing outside the walled mining pit. Whatever he did when he entered the pit will be a mystery for the ages. I may clear those trees and see if I can reproduce it as that spot has spawned several trolls already.

I can't say if it was the case here, but enemies can push one another up a steep incline.

For instance, if the enemies see you and all go to the same location trying to get you, they bunch up and can push one onto the steep incline of the wall. Once an enemy gets stuck on a steep incline, as they wiggle around, they seemingly "bug" up the incline.

I built a "gladiator pit" that I would drag enemies into with the harpoon and witnessed numerous times the enemies pushing onto the steep incline and getting out. I was able to prevent this by using the pick ax, as it gets a more vertical wall than the hoe.

He started outside the wall as I saw him just standing there breathing heavy lol. My mining base was basically a doughnut with a copper node as the hole and the wall as the dough surrounding it. I was on the far wall with the hole between us and shot a fire arrow through some tree cover and hit him. He started towards me then the tree cover seemed to block my view. Next time I saw him he was underneath my position on the top of the wall. He had dropped into the doughnut hole and crossed over to the other side where I was.

I had workbenches blocking spawns all over the place. Since I usually build walls around my bases I always verify where I have met build conditions.

Unfortunately I killed him before I could get any information out of him.

Probably because the wall is terrain and not one of the wood walls, is my guess. Might have clipped down the slight slope. I had a similar set up for my small quarry of a copper mine and greys kept getting in. I ended up putting a wall all around the quarry and that seemed to do the trick. Quite a bit of workbenchs (kept for repair) to pull off, but those are cheap. Just be aware that they will attack said walls though.

Occasionally things can fall down steep walls. Doesn't happen often, probably a graphic snag in the terrain somewhere.
