Game's popularity was over-hyped, now it looks abandoned, I'm not sure it will ever be finished.
Game is raw and unbalanced. When they say in the description it is "brutal" - they say truth, it is most unforgiving game I ever played. Too easy to die, too many accidents can happen, gear is too hard and time-consuming to get and upgrade, and even if you manage - this is not guarantees your survival in next area. When you die - you respawn naked and have to get your stuff back, somehow, from your corpse surrounded by those who killed you. How? Go figure. First two areas (Meadows and Black Forest) it can be done without much stress, but after that it may be too hard or even impossible. You also may fail to get new set of gear because resources are finite. You also lose skills on death, and leveling skills may take days or even weeks to get back.
Price of errors is too high. Dont listen to "manly men vikings chads" who mock others for failing, they have no life and can afford play all day long for months, but some of us cannot.

If there is no reward and punishment, there is no game. Only a boring sandbox.

I like the game just the way it is.

Hey folks,

please focus on giving OP your (non-) recommendation. Debating each other's opinion of the game is rarely constructive.

OP, please also make sure to check out the Steam reviews - they'll probably make for a more comprehensive picture of Valheim's pros and cons.

Thanks & have a good day!

It's an early access, with a small team and new updates hits rather slow,(not SrapMechanic slow) but far from dead. If you're ok with that, you're golden. Otherwise, wait till the game goes gold.
Some find that the game currently has to little content, others like myself hit 1K+ hours before looking into mods. Regardless, I'd say its worth the money, since even the current content makes it worth every penny.
It is a survival game; always prepare for a ressource grind and death. Even from falling lumber.

Honestly throw it on the wishlist and come back in three years when its finished.

When Valheim is finished, it will cost more than $20.00. I think IG/Coffeestain should kick the price up to $25 or $30 as soon as Mistlands drops. It's as if some folks cannot believe that a game so good could be so cheap, so raising the price could be a very good idea.

The game is divided into open zones you can freely enter and explore, but there is a linear progression to the game. That means if you wander off into a biome you're not yet ready for, you will very quickly die and drop your equipment, which you then have to recover. If you stick to the biomes you're supposed to be in and explore everything they have to offer though, it is an easy game that doesn't put much pressure onto you.

Other than that the game is a bit grindy. I enjoy the atmosphere it has and the logistical mini problems the game presents you with through the grind, but if everything has to happen instantly for you that might be an aspect that could annoy you.

The game also has a very high emphasis on building. You don't have to do it, except for a simple main building you use to upgrade your things and store resources in, but then a big chunk of the content is wasted on you.

Lastly the game hasn't been properly updated in month now and apparently the devs buggered off into vacation or something? It's probably not yet abandonware, but if you expect a constant stream of updates and regular new content, this is not it.

That being said the content already in the game is worth the 20 or something bucks. It's well polished, plays well, has great atmosphere, nice music and is fun to play. And you can easily play it in co-op too.

Yes, it's well worth the price tag. Although, you could finish NMS and Raft before jumping into this.

Just bought this game like a week ago, wondering if it'd be any fun to do solo; it is. It is worth it. Very enjoyable build system. Inventory management is a pain, but there's a lot of content.

It's great fun but also incredibly samey at this stage of development. If you are a patient person, then I would recommend playing a finished game instead and then coming back to this one if/when it is complete in five years or so.

In response to @Yasik:

Valheim is considered one of the easy survival titles. This has nothing to do with being a "manly man viking chad", but with what that genre entails.

In that regard I agree with being "over-hyped" as the game attracted players who are not familiar with the genre and were simply put off with what they experienced.

I am almost 61 years old, I am certainly not a "manly man viking chad". But I do have experience with survival games (most notably Conan Exiles), and found the game to be to my liking. Especially since it was a bit more forgiving than Conan Exiles.

Yes, typical survival games are even harder than Valheim. Now, again, I'm not a "manly man viking chad" and I certainly don't look down on the players that don't get along with the genre.

I just learned, adapted, improvised, and now I love the game.

YMMV.

Yes, worth buying, especially since it's so inexpensive.
The game is Early Access. It's not complete. People complain about how long it's taking to release new material, but the devs are releasing updates on a regular basis. These have not been the unfinished biomes, but rather quite a few bug fixes and some additional material for biomes already in play. (We saw one large update to the food and building system early on and some additional material for the Mountain biome.) But no, the game isn't dead, and there is stuff in the pipeline.
As far as gameplay goes, it's pretty unforgiving to people who rush into regions and situations for which they're unprepared. I personally haven't had to do a naked corpse run in a game for many years, and I love that aspect of it. Take your time, see the sights, learn from your mistakes and I think you'll have a great time.

Absolutely worth the price. I've clocked up 577 hours, so that's less then 3 pence per hour. Updates are slow but do come along eventually. In the meantime there's plenty to do and have fun with. Advice would be to take your time and always be prepared because dying and retrieving your loot can be a pain. Don't move to another biome until you know what you are doing

Completely agree with :steamthis:. Valheim was my first try at a survival game and I have over 1,200 hrs of play time so far which for $20 is a very good deal. Never got near as much from other more expensive titles I've played.
As far as updates go, you'll read a lot about devs being slow but that's the way they work. Updates have been made and will continue to be made. As mentioned, there are three biomes left to build out.
If you like exploration and building then this is a great game in my opinion.
