This Game Has it in For Me

So I was trying to set up a tiny portal base on semi-submerged sandbar just off the swamp near Bonemass. A draugr swum out and I guess I wasn't paying enough attention to my hp bar because somehow it killed me.
I dredged through my chests at my main base and managed get enough for a longboat. I portalled as close as possible to the area where I died, assembled my longboat and sailed out there. Night was falling when I finally arrived so I parked in the tiny black forest biome sandwiched between the swamp and a plains biome. I was immediately attacked by some sort of squeaky little fire guy, so I sailed away. As I turned around I was attacked by a sea monster, so I ran up onto the beach again and managed to kill the fire guy. Went back to my sandbar, was ambushed by a wraith and three blobs that came out of nowhere, died again.
Sigh.
Anyone else have "the game wants me to quit" moments?

Telling people to cheat the game is not a viable solution.

What part about not going into the swamp at night is cheating ?

I believe they were referring to the dev commands comment.

I don't have such an epic tale however
the first time i played ever, i was spawned pretty close to a black forest and being a stubborn person i avoided the tutorials so i wandered into the black forest because it looks cool lol and immediately got chased by a bunch of greydwarfs and 2 trolls. So i retreated back to the meadows thinking i'd be safe, immediately running into a pack of bores. so again thinking i was safe i stopped to defend myself, very fast found out trolls n greydwarf chase you everywhere.
got absolutely mauled.

been hooked since hahaha

I have always actually loved moments like this, it makes me into a better player because if I am not making mistakes, I am not pushing myself to learn.

Your attempts are quite spastic, and that is what you're doing wrong.
  1. No matter how hard it is to stay alive at Swamps, walking through Plains is just asking to make simple issues into big troubles. If you have issues walking through water because leeches bite you - look for cattails - they only grow on shallow waters. You can use them to recognize water zones that are safe from leeches, that won't make you swim.
  2. Use bow to draw aggro, so you don't have to deal with all the enemies at the same time. Don't forget that you can always run away, and then come back to try again.
  3. Always buff yourself up. Get the Rested stamina buff. Eat food that provides increased health regeneration.
  4. Control your health and your stamina. 2 big mistakes I used to do were not paying much attention to my stamina, which made consequent fights deadly/resultless, and not paying much attention to my health. It is always a good idea to wait it out and let both regenerate to full. The stamina issue is twice bad at Swamps because of constant Wet debuff, that is also multiplied by Cold debuff, if you're not careful enough about when to rescue your stuff.

I have 3 sets of food at one of my chests:
  1. "I'm going to be doing almost nothing, but someone might try to poke me with sticks" set, consisting of glowing shrooms, cooked meat and some berries
  2. "I'm going to fight regular enemies" set, consisting of turnip stew, carrot soup and sausages
  3. "I'm knee deep in ♥♥♥♥" set, consisting of Lox pie, Serpent Stew and blood sausage.

I also never dispose of my older armor, because I use it to get my lost armor back. The previous tier armor is usually enough for that sole purpose.

Could be a higher chance thing. You may have been near a spawner, and thats why you got a 2 star.

(yeah i know pretty stupid) so we went to shore. then we were immediately attacked by greydwarves, brutes and shamans, accompanied by a troll. now this was an annoying moment for me. so my friend ran back to the boat and i ran along shore trying to "distract" them so we could get away when he was a ways away from shore.
after this happened, the troll decided to go for a swim. so our boat was annihilated and we drowned. i still dont have that stuff back after all this time (150 days valheim time)

And that, is how epic gaming stories are born.

The fear of drying on a corpse recovery (borne of experiences just like the one you describe) had me to the point of neurotic premeditated planning. My last recovery I was in a swamp, I died by carelessly falling off a build.

I've since been through mountains and 5 fulling bases on the plains with no deaths.

Those seem guaranteed to happen sometimes. Especially when you're rushing / not waiting for a proper travel time (example, at night / during storms you're more likely for serpent spawns...so dont travel during then if you dont want to encounter them), and sometimes it comes just because the RNG is being stupid at that point, and it has no idea how low you are on resources.

Ive ragequit once or twice after B.S, but learned from it. Always have some backup armor (your last upgraded gear often does), back up poison / frost resistance potions, as well as healing, stamina, and mead, and backup weapons.

Also, be sure to exploit the corpse run for some of the B.S when it comes to retrieval. Once you hit the gravestone, you're invincible for about a min. Not until you hit it though. It meant to give time to organise your ♥♥♥♥. Til then, the only buff is a lack of skill drain (make sure to be rested before you leave too).

When I was killed by a random Deathsquito during my Bonemass battle, I did just that, as I he was low on health. Grabbed my mace, and naked invinciblity bashed the bastard / and the corresponding slimes, to death. He had already killed the Deathsquito squad (and took damage from them as well).

I feel you with this post. Sometimes it feels like an avalanche of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Pays to take a break and reevaluate your strategy.

Edit : also always carry mats for a portal (sometimes you can leave the greydward eyes behind, as those can easily be farmed in a BF), and leave an open portal at home with a tag of 'emergency' 'explore', or whatever suits you. Then, if you can find a safe spot, pallisade it off, and lay it down, you can always get back to home to restock.

Ahhh but that's the beauty of this game the 'unpredictability'. I've spent hours recovering my corpse's from my errors mostly in bad judgements, the game makes you 'think' plan and evaluate strategies to recover your gear and sometimes it seems nay impossible but it's not its challenging to be sure but that's exactly what always keeps me coming back again in my case anyway. ;-) (PS- It helps to have a friend help you if all feels lost).
