When I did it, there happened to be one of the old stone towers nearby. His attacks were knocking down the trees so they wouldn't protect me, but he couldn't knock down that stone tower! Any of those nearby on your map?

The 4 Pillars that surround his summoning altar cannot be destroyed. I just hide behind those and shoot him with a Finewood Bow and Fire Arrows. When he spawns the roots, just move to the opposite side. The pillars will protect you from his vines that he shoots out.

Maybe have one of you shooting him while the other runs protection from Greydwarves. And make sure you do it during the daytime, mob spawns are much greater during the night.

You can make the fight pretty easy if you prepare the area correctly.

I put a roof in, this forces the roots to get pushed up to the top.

Also use core wood and double fence around the altar. Some fires won't hurt either.

Recently the made his shooty attack much more painful. Put up a hut or two to dodge around and block shots as they get destroyed.

He should go down fast enough with fire arrows and finewood bows.

Had him spawn on the roof once too ha ha

Kill everything and clear out the spawn points in the forest surrounding the Elder's location. This greatly reduces the number of enemies who interfere.
