Playing Solo

I just want to say that it's taken me 75 hours to awaken Bonemass, by myself.
Many many frustrations along the way. A lot of wasted time going to collect stuff when dead. I also had to sail halfway down the map from the center.
You know, I played through Dark Souls 1-3, but the going back to collect your stuff in this game is next-level BS.

I take it that the bosses are supposed to be done in a teams. I only managed to kill the elder with arrows when he got stuck and couldn't see me (took about 100+ arrows).
Bonemass is going to require a big hammer I take it, or I'm going to have to get him to the edge of cliff on the edge of a biome and arrow him to death too? I have maxxed out my iron armour, and have a bronze mace which does stuff all damage, plus he regens faster than I can even hurt him.

I had a friend who playe solo with a "hardcore" challenge, everytime he dies he has to restart with new map and character, it just took him 3 tries so I would say its good for solo and also fun

If you like the majority of your time in this game hacking down trees and watching for rocks and vegatables. Yes. Most of my time in this game is solo even tho farming gets tiring at some point.

It is doable solo, but you have to be extra prepared and prepare for your death. I put down a lot of portals so I can get back to my body quickly. I also use a mod that lets me take metal thru portals and removes my weight limit. I want to play the game, not spend hours and hours and hours moving material around the map.

I've played it almost entirely solo. I co-oped with a friend in the beginning and then later on but he got tired of the game. I would say more fun in co-op, more rewarding in solo. You get a steady feeling of accomplishment solo.

It is more than doable. It isn't actually that difficult of a game to begin with. There are a few things that are made easier or quicker by having more people.

For example you don't need to plan your home portal before leaving if someone else is still waiting at home. They can just link a portal for you from their end whenever you're ready to come back.

Another benefit that you will miss from playing coop is that you can move as many boats full of cargo as you have players. Solo players need to do more metal runs because of this, even though they don't need as much metal as a group would. Alternatively having multiple players fill up a single boat will obviously make for quicker runs too.

I would also argue that combat is a bit tougher in solo. Even though enemies increase their health and damage in the presence of more players, having multiple players means easier stamina management and less disrupted damage output as only one player really has to commit to evasion.

The logistical stuff that you lose from not having other players just makes solo into what is essentially the same game but slower.

Up to Yagluth I did solo no problem. Well, a few problems when I provoked too many fulings at once. Just be cautious and patient, and it's fine. Haven't done mistlands yet, waiting for public test to end.

I did Yag solo in the Mistlands update (where some have claimed he is buffed) use fire resist wine and medium healing mead, run around the stone pillars to heal when you get too hurt, He regens, but you regen faster. Used Frostner, and just beat on him. Took 15 min or so that way, but was never at risk of dying.

1200 hours, most of it on my own. Great building factor, rest of the game is done rather quickly if you keep at it. But either way, this is my favorite survival game and was totally worth the money.

Pre-Mistlands it is a TON of fun... You have to approach each of the new areas with caution, but it is more than playable solo.

Mistlands, as it currently stands, isn't really playable solo, in my opinion. That said, it is not in final launch, so we may see things tweaked so that a solo player can survive.

I never played Dark Souls, Did it have extensive farming, some building, lots of mining, crafting, and more mining, with a biome tied with gear & food progression? oh and more mining?

No, it's normal for most sandbox survival games. Freaking minecraft is more unforgiving about inventory loss than valheim is.

True, but you don't have things destroying your portals at least - meaning that even your best laid plans aren't going to get screwed up by a tough enemy wrecking your portal.

Equipment loss in Valheim is disastrous (takes SO MUCH effort to mine, ship the stuff halfway across the map because you can't bring it through a portal, then build forge, and upgrade equipment).
Whereas for minecraft, not quite so disastrous if you lose gear.

It's really not that difficult solo. I beat Bonemass I believe 40 hours in?, just beat Modder cause I had everything maxed and wanted to move forward. (70hrs~?)

These bosses are also easy to cheese tbh. Bonemass, build a treehouse and stay there with poison potions. Make 200 frost arrows, stay behind a tree that fell down, he'll just stay there.

Next boss was even easier. Dying on a boat over on the next island is hell in the beginning I agree (So is the boat in general lol). But once you'll beat those moments, you'll feel even better about yourself.

Not sure that you can argue that the game is fine to play solo if you have to exploit the AI to do so. But if that's how you enjoy playing the game... each to their own.

I play solo and, as others have said, careful preparation has paid off. Any deaths I've suffered have been from recklessness... and I can't fault the game for that.

A Poison potion and tier 1 Frostner with Tier 1 Wolf Gear destroys Bonemass. Skipping the long grind for Iron Tier and full Bronze Tier, spending 1/10th the time looking for a Silver Mine or 2. Then destroy Bonemass, then quickly after Moder, saving the Iron grind for the Padded Armor and tools.

Mine Bronze to get Forge,Workbench and Cauldron upgrades, make Tier 1 Bronze armor or skip for fully Tiered Troll Armor. Make your Bronze Tools, go to the swamp for some Iron and Ancient Wood, then head for the mountains for that silver and Wolf taming. Then back to swamp. The only Armor, Weapons and Tools I fully upgrade atm is Plains stuff. Everything else seems like a long, long waste of time.

But that is me, you may need to spend 10s of hours upgrading.
Death runs can suck, sometimes a fun challenge, other times annoying, but that is with most all survival games. If you have food, spare armor and weapons, then recovering your stuff isn't difficult.

Maybe the Dark Souls part is the couple hits you dead? IDK never played or watched anyone else play. But a lot of games have the "Dark Souls Like" as they claim.

Why not pick up all the bits and rebuild it, you may need an extra bit or two but carry spares.

If you leave the Portals out in the open and unprotected that's your own fault.

I only play solo and have killed all the bosses and done a couple of playthroughs.
I generally miss out Bronze Armour and Iron just mine enough for the tools/weapons and stick to Troll Armour until into Wolf armour.

Didn't even do it on purpose. I used a hoe to raise the level around the swamp as preparation (Against the water/movement). Just kept arrowing and running, until about halfway he just stopped behind a tree. Skeletons did come behind me. I just stayed there and shot him. As a solo player I don't mind little blessings like that.

I've killed Moder solo and ye had to kill the Elder with arrows while avoiding attacks. It's not the worst thing honestly as while you need to level your gear more than other it can be done, though I've not tried Yogg yet... heard his regen could make it actually impossible.

Though ye death runs could do with a little work, even if you are lucky and built a portal nearby it can still be super hard to get your stuff back depending on what killed you. I'm starting to just chain portals together into a huge jumbled mass so I always have 1 close to where I am currently.

It is totally possible to beat all the bosses solo, without cheats or mods...

Also, the boss difficulty ramps up according to how many players are in the area, so if you decide to team up with someone(s), the boss will actually be a lot tougher, with more hit points, the more people involved.

It's not required, but it is certainly helpful to place portals whenever you are going to sail far away, especially to other islands, that way when you die, it's easier to get your stuff back.

Elder is not that hard to kill... just like all the "grey" mobs, they are all made of wood, including Elder, so use fire arrows on him. Use the corner pillars to block the incoming vine attacks, run to the next pillar when he summons the roots, and shoot fire arrows at every opportunity.

Bonemass, (as well as most swamp mobs), are weak vs. blunt, and again, easy if you run in and attack with blunt weapons, watch for "windup" (meaning he's about to attack), run back out of the way, then run back in and attack between his attacks... bring poison resist mead.

With every boss fight, it's best to fully clear the area of all other mobs before summoning the boss, and make whatever terrain changes you need, beforehand ( such as raising the ground all around Bonemass altar, to get rid of all the water puddles in the whole general area... prevents leeches etc.)
