RAM Hungry?
Fresh install on a clean linux vm. 7GB+ ram idle with no connections.
Is that normal? Should I try another distro? Using Ubuntu 22.04

Are you running server, client, or both?

How come a lot of posts have people that have like no steam level and private profiles? don't you get one steam level for purchasing a game and having at least 20 hours in it?

I currently have two servers running under docker on Ubuntu 22.04, and one is using 11.1G virtual, and the other is using 14.1G. I run the client on Windows, so that's probably not entierly relevent. 7G doesn't sound very big, though.

Their steam level is 0 because their profile is private. Steam doesn't show the level of people who private their profiles. So it has nothing to do with that.

At some point, I need to delve into learning Docker, because it fascinates me. One day.

Running server only. I guess it's normal then. Just quickly searched on google and found everyone saying it should be around 2.5-4gigs but posts were 2 years old though... I would recommend having at least a 32GB ram rig in todays era, 64 is soon going to be the new norm. 12GB's isn't that much ram if you're not using a windows PC as Windows uses their internal drives to act as additional memory. Its great if people have m.2's. Another Factor ive noticed is that most applications on devices that are not running a Windows OS do utilize a lot more ram but to be frank 7 - 12GB's of ram Usage for an app doesn't seem like much on a Non Windows OS machine.
Edited to state: "Usage of ram for an app".

Some of the concepts are kind of confusing a first, but it's not that hard. Spin up an Ubuntu 22.04 server somewhere, install docker, portainer (runs under docker, but provides a web-based GUI for controlling docker containers), and it's all gravy from there.
This is the Valheim docker image that I use: https://hub.docker.com/r/lloesche/valheim-server
