What to expect from the Mistlands update?

It's been taking a bit longer than I expected, but it's well within reason. I think it's reasonable to believe that more bugs have been squashed, that the game is more polished due to the success, and that IGS have been allowed to add more content and overall quality, at the expense of a slower development cycle. It could ofc be other explanations too, but they've been covered in plenty of other threads and posts.

So, instead of vaguely expecting to be blown away by the Mistlands update - what exactly do you believe the new update will include? What is reasonable to expect from this 17€ early access title for the first biome patch?

My expectations: A complete Mistlands biome, including a couple of new enemies, a few new wildlife, one or two new resources - tree or metal maybe, a few new building pieces, a couple of new food items, some new recipes, a few new furnitures/work tools, a new weapon or two, and a new boss.

If you speed through the content, it may provide you with 5-10 hours of content. If you enjoy the game, gameplay loop and game world, it will add to the experience and make the whole game better. The Mistlands update will likely change very little for those who need constant mod adds to keep them entertained, and people who are impatient with the early access process will soon be impatient again.

My take on it before the release of the Mistlands update. If you want - feel free to add your own thoughts and arguments.

I suspect that we will get a crafting update in September similar to H&H last year and that will contain the new forge. Mistlands may be a biome update in March similar to Frost Caves this year. I'm still anticipating that the Yagluth Thing will be needed to unlock the new crafting station(s). The bone bow (verte-bow?) will probably be from Mistlands but the cross bow could be based on Plains objects like black metal and black wood and perhaps using Lox hide rather than deer hide. So if IGS follows a two-per-year update program with crafting in Fall and biome in Spring (along with minor releases during the year) then all of the above crafting suggestions may be candidates for a release this September. Still hoping for some storage in the Lox saddle as well. But I like all of the suggestions in the earlier part of this thread.

I will just assume that all the other minor content upgrades took that long because they've been working on the mistlands inbetween, so I expect quite a lot.

- at least 1 new armor set (all biomes except for plains have 2 armor sets as of now)
- hopefully some more blackmetal weapons
- a new tier of weapons including at least a new bow and better pick
- another 'magic' weapon like frostner but with another damage type (maybe poison)
- longsword weapon type for most metals, hopefully not with the same animations as two-handed axes
- new building blocks, maybe a new tier of wood or stone
- 5-10 new mobs, 1 new boss
- a few new food sources
- maybe the next tier of potions (so far we have only medium stuff)
- the fishing stuff (didn't expect that but they teased it so I might aswell include it)
- hopefully some minor additions to older biomes

What I would personally like to see:

* More Black Metal weapon/tool availability.
* New tier of weapons, tools, and armor (or two or three) for Mistlands specifically.
* New unique items such as Frostner, Porcupine, and Draugr Fang.
* New unique enemies, which I know are already coming. I do like surprises, though.
* Normalization of food durations, with a change to when decay starts happening.

* Possibly the addition of weapon-related bonuses added to existing armor sets. Example would be: Troll Leather set already offers a Sneak bonus; if you use a dagger, give it a critical damage multiplier buff. If you use a sword, hammer, etc. give them a different buff.

* Possibly a more fleshed out skill system, which allowed for use of particular combat-related weapon skills. In other words, a bit more on the RPG-element side of things.

* Possibly the introduction of "Legendary" crafted items. We already have Flametal, but it has no use aside from being able to be turned to Ingots. I theorize that perhaps this will be used for a Flame-based two-handed sword, similar to what Surtur uses in the mythos. Obviously we wouldn't be crafting THAT weapon, but a "replica" so to speak.

* Upgrade for the Hammer and Hoe that allows for QoL-related changes, such as mass planting/harvesting, and lower Stamina costs when building/repairing. (Think of grid-based planting, assuming you have the seeds on-hand. For the Hammer, how about a mass-repair option?)

* Some sort of procedurally-generated rogue-like dungeon with unique rewards.. although something like this could be an update in and of itself, and as of right now we lack a gameplay loop to warrant such a system. This is mostly me thinking of long-term enjoyment aside from building.

And, obviously, I'd like to see massive improvements with the Engine itself that allowed for better performance all around. I enjoy the graphics as they are, but we all know what starts happening when your structures contain too many entities. I'd like to see this issue alleviated entirely, however I'm afraid limitations with Unity keep it from happening.

Best case scenario, in a perfect world, I'd absolutely love to see Valheim using its own Engine, which got rid of the limitations it currently has under Unity. However, I also know such a thing would require all current and future development for the game to halt indefinitely, and even longer to port it in.

So, if there was ever a "Valheim 2", I would absolutely want IGS to build their own Engine for it. With such an updated Engine, we could have things like tunnel building, less terraforming restrictions, and likely better performance over all.

But anyway.

5 months later, I'll bump this thread because I think it's getting relevant again.

Really looking forward to the update, but at the same time, there's probably a good number of people who are expecting more than what the update will bring. Having the expectations within reason won't hurt anyone.

What I hope for beyond the new biome - more bird song variety - owls in the Mistlands maybe and some added other wild life sounds.

My take, and I know that quite a few people will jump on this and rip me a new one:

If you don't like the game as it is right now, you will not like it any better when Mistlands comes out. It will be - as usual - not enough, too late, or whatever other "reasoning" these people come up with.

On the other hand, if you like the game for what it is right now, and think that less than 17 Euro is a more than fair price for the current game, you never had much reason to quit the game, and you will gladly continue playing it.

I know, there's people inbetween all of this, and they may, or may not find the expansion suitable to them or not.

If you have 5 people in a room, you will get 8 opinions. And it's really nothing more than that.

Well, I don't think you're at all wrong. Although I find myself in the in between category. I love the game, but I've done all the content and I'm waiting for more. I've gotten my money's worth several times over, so no complaints.

The interesting part in this discussion, for me at least, is if you want to stick your neck out and say what you expect in terms of content. Are your expectations reasonable? Will IGS exceed or fail to meet your expectations? It's an exercise for 'both sides'... Put your money where your mouth is at a very low level. This instead of either defending or complaining about the update afterwards without any reasonable ground.

You can provide your expectations before it's released. It's sticking your neck out, but just a harmless exercise. Mistlands has been under development a decent amount of time, but when I look at what I'm expecting from it - it's not that long at all. I'd be happy if they include it all.

It's a forum for discussion and speculation in the end.

I don't expect much from mistlands anymore. I think i have seen most features that' ll be added and i have to say i am disappointed mainly because this is going to be a bugtopia game like many others out there.. I was expecting something that takes so long to bring more unique features.
Don't get me wrong, i'm fine with current game (except optimisation) and definitely got my money's worth, but if we are here to criticise next "expansion" based on previous biomes we already know 3 out of possibly 3-5 inhabitants:
- 1. Hare (a critter)
- 2. Tick (a bug, probably as main mob)
- 3. Moth (another bug, on the works)
- 4?. Possibly one more bug for those dungeons that revealed...
So, maybe no room for more like dark elves or dwarves.
As for the weapons, they look very promising, no problem here.
Building aside, darkstone (obsidian?) looks cool but i think it wasn't so necessary, i mean we need more stuff like leather tents, mounted furniture, more roof options (where are those steep roofs??) and QoL things that should have been in H&H.
Atleast, i hope/expect there will be no more mining and we 'll have to loot/farm the main resources like we did in the Plains.

kestmobthe replied to What to expect from the Mistlands update? June 28, 2022 @ 2:20:26 am PST

my expectations are pretty high because we're taking so long my guess is we get a LOT of stuff.. so:

-atleast 10 new creatures (both enemies and just animals);
-maybe 5 new armor sets;
-2 or 3 new progression "levels" with new materials;
-would love 2 or 3 new weapons (new swords, new shields etc..., a great sword has been confirmed);
-would be awesome a two handed battle axe;
-dual wielding even though they said in an AMA that if they introduce the concept would be with a type of weapon that is dual wield (like in V rising);
-atleast 2 new upgrades on weapons with new arrow types;
-utility tools or new upgrades;
-new building pieces of course;
-they hinted round building pieces;
-new boat types;
-new recipes;
-new decorations (but not a priority imo);
-new cart maybe? that would be awesome;
-new fish types;
-they showed us new traps;
-combat improvements and balancing;
-a new biome boss and a couple of world mini bosses;
-revamp of existing world buildings (for more immersion);
-new farmable seeds;
-maybe a new npc, like a different merchant than what we already have;
-new merchant's goods tradable with gold coins;
-new mounts, they teased maybe a flying mount (the giant bug fly teaser that if i'm not mistaken they hinted that could be friendly idk);
-with new biome comes new dungeons (maybe a more difficult one considering that would be an endgame biome);
-new nordic mythology eastereggs;
-perhaps new hints on the lore of the world tree of the map;
-improvements on terraforming (maybe?);
-new water flow system (maybe? but unlikely);
-improvements on UI (hopefuly);
-a dedicated slots for equipments (hopefuly but very unlikely);

This is a couple of points that comes in mind... I'M SUPER MEGA HYPED!!! DEVS, THE EXPECTATION IS THROUGH THE ROOF!!! DON'T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW US THAT THE SLOW DEVELOPMENT IS JUSTIFIED WITH A MEGA HYPED CONTENT WE'RE WAITING FOR MORE THAN A YEAR!!!

In a way I am lucky because I just bought the game and I have not gone through all there is to offer yet so basically my only expectations is being met knowing they are still working on the game. Knowing nothing at all I might speculate it will add some more hours in content for people to enjoy but who knows if it will be a lot of game changing stuff or not.

Mistlands, besides what I have seen in videos, (new mushrroms, enemies, Crossbow, Bone Bow, Great Sword (looks awesome btw), Bear Traps (implying bears maybe) Giant Ticks, Hare, Flying bug and the new Marble build pieces as well as new crafting table) I'm guessing there might be at least another 2 or 3 enemies that haven't been revealed yet, and I'm guessing it might be Elves or something.
There would also probably be either more of the same or different enemies again in the Cave thing they put up with the webs in Mistlands, again though, at a guess.

I've been exploring the Mistlands on one of my mining worlds too, and the weather is the only thing that seems to be adjusted from the old variant that had the giant trees in it - It's misty, and baron.

But, from the teaser shots I seen and the small glimpses I have seen of it, it's starting to look like a bit of a combination of Black Forest, Plains and something completely new all together, so looking forward to seeing that, actually glad they changed the landscape.

Also, wouldn't mind having some of this included in the update when it gets released, if it hasn't been bought up already.

1. Buildable Ivy would be sick.
2. Plant-able Red Mushrooms/Cloudberries (cloudberries only in plains though)
3. more weapons, maybe more Obsidian type things. Obsidian Spear?
4. Build pieces with Ancient Bark please, maybe mossy roofs. I have tons of it.
5. Basket Weave Fences (wood) Stone chest (stonecutter) small storage barrels.
6. Another recipe for Serpent Meat, Maybe combined with Plains tier food.
7. Another recipe for Fish?
8. More furniture obviously, hanging deer & wolf rugs would be a good alternative.
9. More shield paint varieties & patterns.
10. Fenrings shouls drop Fenris Hair, (to make it renewable) the only unique thing they drop is a trophy currently.
11. More enemies in Caves & Crypts maybe add leeches in the water or something.
12. An agressive fish that bites you when you are wading/swimming.
13. Eels. (catchable with fishing rod)
14. More stuff for Haldor to sell.
15. Armour set with Yimir flesh because why not. Berserker Armour? (buffs melee)
16. Add Bears in one or 2 of the biomes.
17. A new Weapon for the new forge? Maybe craftable Drynwyn with Flammetal?
18. Black Metal Great Axe, Black Metal Mace, Chitin tipped arrows? Chitin Spear?
19. Pine cone drop rate increase would be good.
20. Increase Serpent day spawns. (they do spawn, but rare as hen's teeth)
21. Add new points of interest in all biomes?
22. make 1 & 2 star Lox to spawn in the wild.
23. More recipies for the Oven
24. More enemy types in the Meadows.

Off the top of my head for now. (there might be more)

higly unlikely we will ever see engine improvements updates... devs took decades to develop the game before releasing to steam in early access... i bet it will take 10 more years to finish the game in its current state and considering the pace of development...

Its not that reasonable this is not a very complicated and in depth game for it to take this long lol

Feel free to speculate, share your expectations and discuss about the content of the Mistlands update. But please remember to stay on this particular topic. Thank you!

-would love 2 or 3 new weapons (new swords, new shields etc..., a great sword has been confirmed);
-would be awesome a two handed battle axe;
-dual wielding even though they said in an AMA that if they introduce the concept would be with a type of weapon that is dual wield (like in V rising);
-atleast 2 new upgrades on weapons with new arrow types;
-utility tools or new upgrades;
-new building pieces of course;
-they hinted round building pieces;
-new boat types;
-new recipes;
-new decorations (but not a priority imo);
-new cart maybe? that would be awesome;
-new fish types;
-they showed us new traps;
-combat improvements and balancing;
-a new biome boss and a couple of world mini bosses;
-revamp of existing world buildings (for more immersion);
-new farmable seeds;
-maybe a new npc, like a different merchant than what we already have;
-new merchant's goods tradable with gold coins;
-new mounts, they teased maybe a flying mount (the giant bug fly teaser that if i'm not mistaken they hinted that could be friendly idk);
-with new biome comes new dungeons (maybe a more difficult one considering that would be an endgame biome);
-new nordic mythology eastereggs;
-perhaps new hints on the lore of the world tree of the map;
-improvements on terraforming (maybe?);
-new water flow system (maybe? but unlikely);
-improvements on UI (hopefuly);
-a dedicated slots for equipments (hopefuly but very unlikely);

If the Mistlands update turns out to be dull and lacking considering the time it took to be delivered i would be highly highly disappointed... and that would say a lot against the developers and their approach on the development of the game... hope my expectations are reasonable in regards to the devs' plans

Not sure why the post about IGS and Coffee Stain was deleted. I would've liked to have read more in depth as it had some interesting thoughts ...I suspect it was the poster himself who deleted it though since I didn't see much controversy in it, aside from more of a wide perspective speculation :steamsad:

Well, we can't answer that until the expansion actually gets released. ;)
