You are being hunted while out in the plains trying to get back to base before rest bonus evaporates. I usually audibly say "son of a...come on!" Happened to me twice, but I found some boulders to jump on to to range them. Wolf skewers on the house!

Yeah that "You Are Being Hunted" one has put a fright into me a few times. A different kind of fear though, one that starts as a low ebb and builds up to, "Dang my pride, these waves are wearing me down, I'ma gonna die." Foolish me with my padded armour, black metal shield & porcupine, thinking I could wade through these waves of wolves without stamina pots ...

Polonius is so right, nice to know the startle still works. And trolls can still freak me out momentarily even though I know he's history with just a couple arrows at this point, or even a well placed parry. The frost caves are good for provoking a little in-game anxiety... Which is probably why we love this game so much.

This troll came at me while I was making a comfy cave home in the forest by the plains and scared the crap out of me.

So, I took the bugger down to the nearest Fuling village for some fun times.
Worked out nicely (for me) in the end. Yes, the Troll won and I promptly ran away away like brave Sir Robin.

Yeah, I had a swamp moment that shaved a year off life once. Got swarmed from like 4 directions at once... draugr, blobs, skeletons, and a wraith. I ran, and ran, and ran. Blessed goddess of acceleration don't fail us now.

By the time It was over, I was practically vibrating in real life from the adrenaline. just extreme jitters.

Yeah, the Wraiths definitely added gray to my hair. I keep forgetting to look up.

It is a good idea to expect the worst. Have a portal in or near one's HQ named "Emergency" or "Backup". I got lucky recently, I got stranded similar to the OP. I had unintentionally reset my spawn point to a remote island shelter I had just built. While taming a couple of Lox, I was attacked by 2 Deathsquitos, which would normally not be a problem for me, but the completely hit me by surprise, scaring the hecoutta me, while I was low on health after fighting Fulings, while wearing Troll-Hide gear, rather than my Padded armour. I had enough materials on hand to build a portal, and lo & behold after building it, it said, "Connected" before I could assign it a name. I had an unnamed portal back at my HQ. I was surprised that that worked as a connection, having 2 unnamed portals, but it did, and they all lived happily ever after.

Recently had a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ side-story arc with my newest character.

My Karve actually did a full 180 flip during a rainstorm and capsized, and I ended up drowning about five feet from the coastline. Attempted to get to said body with a Raft, and then realized that wasn't gonna ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ happen, so I sort of crash-landed on a small island that I had visited before that was about 30% Meadows and 70% Black Forest. I brought absolutely nothing with me (since I thought I could actually get to my body), but the raft is complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, so I started essentially from square one.

I got some basic gear, made a small base, looted a couple of nearby burial chambers for the surtling cores, borrowed a 1 Star Log Troll to smash the ♥♥♥♥ out of some Tin/Copper (since no pickaxe) and some Birch trees for Fine Wood (since no bronze axe), built a Forge, made 80 Bronze Nails, built a Karve, got the ♥♥♥♥ out, and finally re-secured my gear.

I died in the mountains today with my great stupidity (first death in this world). Yesterday I finished the iron equipment, boiled mead against frost. I didn't want to go around the mountains this morning (damn, after 700 hours of playing, I'm already a hero, isn't it ?). I haven't had sausages and turnips yet, but I was confident enough ... I spotted two wolves, one i killed with bow from sneak, but the other one saw me. Well, instead of pressing key 3 (knife), I accidentally pressed 4 (axe). I blocked its blow, but the axe is slow. So I hit the wolf only once and then I didn't have enough time to switch to the knife. RIP. Fortunately, I'm close to the base ...
