Not being able to level up weapon skill as before is profoundly dumb, so is stamina for that matter
If you want to level up any skills, you can grind just about any skills;
you want to level up jumping, well keep on jumping in your house.... swimming, keep swimming from one side to the other of the beach.... wood-chopping ...keeping hitting trees with your axe...
Hitting your weapon on a rock or tree is really up to anyone if they want to head in this direction...it is still going to take you a good amount of time to do so...
I play hardcore all my games....this includes world of warcraft and others.... except pvp obviously....so i delete my character and game when i die...and restart over... i'm not levelling my skills up to 100%.... it would take way too long to do so... but i like to train a little before going on .....the skills takes so long to level up that there's some skills that would never get to 100% without grinding them intentionally ever...even finishing the game 20 times....i think it took like 3h leveling sneaking to 25.... of course i was watching tv shows at the same time....first time i even bother leveling sneaking...how is anybody going to get to 100% goes being imagination.....well unless you cheat which is fairly easy to do....but this is not a direction i would like...
When a warrior back then would prepare his young life to be a warrior, his first ability with a weapon was not facing an enemy....he would train prior to going to battle sometimes many months or years.... and i don't feel like bugging one of my friend to join in the game so that he can hold his shield up for the next hour so that i can level up my weapon..... i would rather delete the game then doing that...
On another subject, the stamina, pretty sure it hasn't changed... i've stopped playing when there was that mess up of a situation with the food and came back yesterday.....didnt feel like blocking was any better....it eats all of your stamina....basically saying... please keep using a bow for 80% of your fights especially against boss or more dangerous creature because it won't take long for you to run out of stamina...which kills the fun of melee fight....
maybe you should average the Running/Swimming/Jumping into a new value call Endurance and add those to basic health and stamina... maybe that would help....

Bow skill levels up by just hunting boars, deer and birds; for melee weapon skills you can call Eikthyr (or other bosses) as often as you want and kill it.

I think greylings, greydwarfs, boar and necks provide targets and melee dummies, as well as the deer we shoot for food and hide, and the birds we shoot for feathers. You don't need to make practice part of your routine: you are constantly practicing as you explore, hunt and build.
Greylings are perfect melee dummies. After a while, so are greydwarfs. Want to skill-up on blocking? Stand there and let them hit your shield until you get bored. To make it more interesting, put your shield up just in time for a knock-back. Practice ducking and rolling.
When your base is mobbed, duck out and take them on, then duck back if you are losing. Don't kill an enemy with one shot if you can do it with five.

Dude just found a graydwarf spawner and use them like dummy spawners , you can train way more faster with that than hitting a rock , and you are comparing move skills with combat skills , thats why devs surely changed , you must Hit other creatures

Game is in early access, there's only 5 biomes out of the 9 planned. You can finish the game as it is with nothing above level 30, and the progressing curve will likely be tweaked as development goes on

Do you realise the amount of dmg hitting a tree or rock would do to your blade irl? That is a bad thing to do. I mean if thats the way you want to go im all for it but it should totally wreck your weapon in 4-5 hits. Thats why most warriors trained with training weapons. you could try to get that sort of thing in the game.
As for stamina even though i bought the game a while ago i too have only recently started playing it so i couldn't comment on that.

Well lets see... Hitting a rock to level up your effectiveness in Combat... ya no.
Game is in early access. Things could change (There is even a possible training dummy down the road)
just hit a mob. There are lots of them.

I'll go on average....because I didn't time it.
I usually try to start with all my stats at around 30% to get a buffer starting point
Your bow aim faster etc... and btw, I didn't look if bow still upgraded itself for hitting a tree, but this is how archer trained.....well they would hit a haystack target but similar......since we don't have that in the game...
But if i go on average...takes maybe 30min of constant hitting to get to 30%... let's say i downplay it, i'm generous there... you hit 30 times a minute.... so that is about 900 hits to get to 30%...and this does scales so it is harder to level up.... Let's say you kill a mob in about 3 hits, i would have to go on a rampage searching for about 300 mobs to kill and bring some wood with me to build up repair station.... yeah this won't take 30 minutes anymore....this will take the whole day....
I mean if you can craft a dummy as a beginner with proper mats and that said dummy can at least survive.... 50 hits if not 100.....9 dummies....
But back in the days, people would train against people with training weapon indeed....we don't have that in the game...so hitting a tree instead is fine by me
Keep in mind that all the other skills can be trained without involving creature hunting.....
You could argue that blocking requires creature hitting you....yes but you only have to gather a pack of 4-6, make a barn and have them hit you for the next 4 hours to get to 50%... you keep your shield up pressed and backspace in a corner.... yeah i leave something on my keyboard and i'm off doing something else... but can you imagine.... 4 hours of constant blocking ...about once every second.... that is about 15000 blocks to get to 50% only...... i could finish the game 20 times, if not grinding the skill, there is no chance whatsoever that i'll get near 100%

This is probably a troll post, but...
Why would you need to level the skills? This is not RuneScape - in RuneScape you are meant to level the skills as content is locked behind skill levels.
The skills are merely a bonus for surviving and for you to have a sense of progress while PLAYING the game. It also gives extra reasons not to die. It is not intended for you to farm the skills. Whacking a stone is not real gameplay, just use cheats to level skills if you are not interested in actually playing the game.
For example, why would you level run/jump by spamming them in your base? Extra run skill allows you to run a bit more with the same amount of stamina. But being able to run a little farther does not help you save time at all as you wasted more time leveling the skill in the first place.

If you would have read my first post, i play hardcore, so you want that little edge....because it might make the difference between life and death.....
Furthermore, if you feel like it doesn't matter....then you should not have any objection to allowing such a thing ....
Easy example is the bow....you aim faster as your skill goes up.... this is pretty important.....it probably is not between 30 and 70%.... but between 0 and 30%...you can see a notable difference....

Having your character auto attack a stone for 3 hours is not different at all from just raising your skill by 30 levels using cheats. I don't see your point in playing "hardcore" but wanting an easier mode at the same time.
The only thing devs need to change regarding this is make weapon skills level based on damage, not hits. Now you basically stop leveling once you have good weapons as everything except bosses dies in like 3 hits.

Well if they change the system, then sure.....other avenues can be explore....
As to what you're suggesting, in any game you can make your life easier or harder....
There was people in the WoW Hardcore guild who played only with normal (white colored) items...no magical boost....hey they can do whatever they want....i think they called it Ironman.... only thing is going to happen is that they will be scare of doing some quests and fights.... while on the other hand i was playing with all the weapon types...but i was taking much harder fights... so it is for anyone's to define how hard they want to make it on themselves....
I've killed the first boss with a basic bow with my bow skill lvl 1.... takes forever to aim.....the fight lasted much longer..... this time around, i've managed to get some fine wood by having normal trees fall on them and then use them to chop some more fine tree by pushing them onto each other.....got myself a fine wood bow and did lvl up my bow skill to lvl41....the fight was much faster.... it just happened that way that i was on a map that allowed me to get some fine wood quicker...because of how the trees were disposed in the area.... are you going to try to prevent that too? a bit ironic here...
In the end, keep something in mind..... if you allow skills to level up if you have somebody to play with with pvp on....then what you're doing is really just pissing off those who does not have or don't want to bother a buddy to grind skills up...

i do miss the old traning method. but i found a new one for myself which is quite as good. i go into the swamp (and at the beginning burial grounds, but it's slower cuz you need to run out to repair) and find a skeleton's(or draugr's if you dare) spawner there. skeletons are no threat so i just kill them over and over and over again. just be cautious and don't destroy a spawner. and if therre are arechers - hide behind the tree. they'll come to you.
if you'll build a covered workbench(or forge if your weapon require one) you'll be able to stand there indefinitely. just don't forget to eat your food in case of an invasion
