I was fishing today in the plains where having no health is not a smart option. I could hardly pull in a level one fish due to the thrashing. I'm level 30 atm and lost three in a row. And they were close in, very close. Once the thrashing starts the fish is indeed glued where it is and stam drops to nothing even with medium potion. It's a total waste of time now.

I dunno, every time they work on fishing, it's worse than before. Going to have to make a pen and fish that way when I feel the fishing urge. Fishing is totally forked now. Good thing it's not very useful after the plains, umm and it's not much use before then either. Sad times.

On the other hand, am overrun with tetra. 5 caves so far in my first two mtn ranges with them. RNG is a fickle godess.

if you give up on it, there are a couple of map seeds with a cave right near the spawn in.

I don't think so, at least not at this time lol. I have a couple other "legitimate" worlds I can visit, and I'm not going near the unimplemented/incomplete biomes anyway.

My world is pre-frost caves so the nearest peaks don't even have them. I've found a 2-3 lakes but no fish yet.

I've found the only way for me to catch fish after the "fishing hat" update and it is baiting the fish close to the shore by slowly pulling the bait, after is bites pull before it starts thrashing and walk back until fish is out of the water

The update was suppose to make reeling when they are not thrashing around consume LESS stamina. So the idea is to wait for when they idle and pull, stop when they thrash, then pull again when they are idle.

Maybe you caught a level 3 or higher fish, those consume huge amounts of stamina to reel regardless. Bring a Medium Stamina Potion to refill stamina bar and not lose your catch if you get a higher level one hooked.

But yes, even before the patch catching fish 20m away was not really possible. Best to keep your cast well under 10m.

They need to fix the feedback players get on when the fish is thrashing/struggling. The indicator should be the fishing rod, not the fish itself (which will often be out of view) The rod should bend aggressively when the fish is fighting, and only slightly when the fish is resting.

Higher tier fishes (or even big lower tier fishes) do require a LOT of stamina.

In order to ensure a catch, eat 3 stamina foods so you have 200-250 stamina, use a boat to go near the fishes, and cast your line 2-3 meters from it. The closer you are, the less stamina will be required. Remember to spam E to pick up the fish as early as possible before it can swim away.

I know that, it worked before the update. The problem is fish become stuck after the initial pull

They THRASH now. Watch for them wiggling and water particles flying around—it is hard to notice and they need to improve on that. If you reel while they are thrashing around it will consume absurd amounts of stamina so only reel when they are not thrashing.
