Seriously troll raids?!

I like that this game is hard and grindy. I'm a fan of Dark Souls, so I'm no stranger to heartache. I don't mind building a second boat and corpse running across the map if I die somewhere dumb or having personal progress stalled or set back.

What I do mind is having god knows how many hours of build time jeopardized when these blue a$$hats show up suddenly at night, in a storm, get healed by dwarf shamans, supported by brutes and the cold/wet debuffs, and then stick around to throw rocks at my house after I fail to deal with all that and they kill me.

I have my wolf farm in a tree and thankfully, they were aiming at the platform and not the trunk, so the damage was repairable, but it would really make me sad if a long, careful build got trashed by a surprise troll.

I guess the moral of the story is to pick an island to locate my base on next time :steamsalty:

You can add a wide deep moat around your build.

Also, I tried upvoting your picture, because I like the tower you made, but Steam said I recently made a change to my account and I can't vote for about 5 days.

Yep, troll raids. Now you know. Just a tip though, if you build in a mountain, pretty sure the troll raid won't happen there, for some reason. You will get other raids though.

Defending against trolls while they can be difficult is not too difficult.

First Islands... well Trolls will walk through a lot of water so unless it is of shore and you have cleared any possible spawn point you can still get attacked. So it isn't a "solution" really.

Defense a ditch of any height with a sharp edge they can't walk down. The longest reaching troll attack is about 8m-12m (not including rocks being thrown)

So I generally use a simple Ditch, Lip, Earthwork approach. A ditch that is at least 2m (usually 4m) wide and generally only about 2-4m deep. Then a 2m lip, and a Earth work that is 3-4m high minimum and about 2m thick. Then on the back side of that I put my palisades. This is almost always out side of all but a rock through attack. This means if they stay on the other side of the ditch you can't be hurt. If they get into the ditch having the palisade where it is and supported by a earth work means it is unlike to be broken. If you leave the space under the Palisaide empty (or for wood and rock storage) then even if they get in the ditch they can't hit any of your structures inside. (I can confirm this fully as they did get in and did no damage to any of my structures nor the palisades and crenellations

I also will line my earth works with 45 degree beams but that is much more a facade. However it gives the Trolls a target. They want to find something to target and attack. So if they have all the 45 degree beams on the outside of your walls to target they are much less likely to try to find a weak point. My first base missed this and they were able to get close enough to my garden to attack it through the wall and lost a full crop.

Is it over kill... yes... Will it defend against drakes... Likely not.

Raids of any type are easy to deal with. Just run outside and either kill or kite the raiders. If you are out in the open (and inside the red circle) the raiders will chase you and ignore the base. Either run outsid and kill everything that moves or if its a type of enemy you have trouble dealing with just kite them till the raid is over and then you can drag them away from the base and loose them in the forest or wherever.

If you make a large enough area covered by work benches with a decent moat they won't even spawn in for the event. And if they do they should be far enough away to just stand around.

It's really kind of unfortunate for a game with such a fun building aspect to have mechanics and AI that make any sort of common sense defensive building more a liability than an asset.

Between the drunken sailor pathing, mobs knocking walls down faster than I can kill them with the best bow in the game, and not being able to shot downwards means I've resorted to 1.5 unit high 3 unit thick curtain [s]walls[/s] platforms that can hold things back long enough to kill the big AOE building killer mobs and for food to take effect so I can go run them away from my building and pick them off with bows.

Bunkers and earthworks. The mobs just hit structures like modern artillery and bombing.

Should probably change the name of the title. They are extremely authoritarian about having a positive tone around here. Toe the party line or the pigs that are more equal than others will put you in your place.

Thats not true. Its very easy to kite mobs in this game. If there is a raid with mobs too difficult or too many to fight you can just kite them around untill the attack is over, then lead them away from the base and loose them in the forest. That strategy works with litterally zero defensive structures in place. All you need is some terrain to kite around stuff.

i don't use defences at all on my main base. they just hinder my movement. and every time i hear "ground is shaking" i just run away from my home and shoot them all (they always prio killing me instead of damaging my buildings if nothing prevents to reach me (though if they attack from the side of a boar\wolf farm ... i just sigh and ship a new bunch of enemies after attack. cuz troll's aoe usually deadly)

The kite part would be the part where I mentioned having a curtain platform thick enough to withstand an attack long enough for food buffs to take effect so you can run the attack away from your base.

The point is, the game logic has you having to protect your castle instead of the castle protecting you. Does that make any sense at all?

why not? in real life castles are not protecting anyone either. it's the job of the people inside to repel the attackers.
i think in valheim the most you can do is surround your base with spikes(they can kill greys) and 2star wolves. also i have a feeling that Lox can defeat trolls quite easily.

I just raised the ground like mini mountains in a circle around my base, and have towers set up on every corner, itโ€™s only 2 trolls, they stare at me while I shoot them in the face.

I am pretty sure this is false.
Trolls prioritize destroying building blocks over attacking the player, so unless you manage to agro them enough, and you cant do that in a horde, they will always attack whatever you have build.

What i dont get is why this is in the game in the first place, considering the game revolves so much around building that the last update was almost focused entirely on this aspect of the game.
Destroying player made structures seems weird to me, considering how many complex and time consuming structures players make and share online of this game.

A mote might help, but if that is the only counter against this and that does not exactly work when building near water. It seems like a weird mechanic.

Almost as if the developers forgot that not all enemies in a horde give the same challenge or result.

You can actually still just use raised earthen walls to accomplish the same thing. I usually do that when I build swamp bases and then the only things that come in to bother me are wraiths, which really is more like a delightful blessing considering the chain scarcity.

Does it look good? No haha not really, but it's not a moat.

Another part of base defence is to never go hungry. When you have a farm going its incredibly easy to always have some food buffs going. Just some turnip stew meat and honey gives you enough ho and stamina for some base defence and taking a hit without dying from most things.
For expeditions to dangerous places you might want better buffs, but in general its always helpfull to have a bit of extra health and stamina even if you are just building/tending your base. So etimes you take fall damage so why not always aiming for having north of 100 health?
