Try both and see what's better, but in my experience, Vulkan has weird HDR, even though I don't think this is an HDR game, the HDR setting in windows will boost highs and lows pretty well.

Vulkan has overall less brightness with Windows HDR enabled, dont' know why.

If that isn't a concern for you, Typically Vulkan is the better API to run with AMD cards. Typically.

I play the game on an RX580 2048SP double overclocked and doing well usually but ever since an update last year like luan Vulkan actually performs worse than direct x... that didn't used to be the case it used to work as it should faster and with more fps but whatever updates they did last year one of them appears to be causing an issue using vulkan

and considering luans is not a 580 i'd say it's specific to all of the RX500 series usually I don't complain direct x does run better than it used to as long as I play at 3200x1800 but I used to be able to play at 3840x2160 on Vulkan while streaming for one short while and get a playable framerate but that is no longer the case it's worse than DX!

when streaming or recording or not the best option is DX on 3200x1800 right now which kinda sucks cause I used to have the performance before so going back does feel like a downgrade! especially since I can't use any form of anti-aliasing because for some reason I take a massive performance hit!

(can't wait till April i've been saving up since last year for a 3070Ti then realised in Jan I didn't want it cause 30 series is already dates so i'm buying a strix 4070Ti OC edition, but not everyone can save up the money like me, so I think it would be nice of my fellow RX500 brethren could once again experience the joys of Vulkan working as it should, better than dx like everyone else seems to get)

if you have anything nvidia that is at least the min requirements for this game, the only difference you will see is the lower fidelity.

frames and everything on min req nvidia setups do not change at all.

at least that's my experience.

That's a bit biased and somewhat misleading.

Vulkan may have started out at AMD, but it's a legitimate attempt to make a standard modern 3D graphics API that can work across a wide range of hardware and operating systems. It's supported by Nvidia and Microsoft, but I imagine only half-heartedly, since they're in the drivers seat, so they don't want more competition.

If you run Windows using an Nvidia GPU you're might very well see a decrease in performance, but, given the ridiculous cash grab that Nvidia's been trying to pull off with the 40 series graphics cards, we need more competition in the GPU market, so I welcome alternatives.

I found I got less shakey lighting performance with Vulkun. 3070ti, for what it's worth.

Vulkun is technically superior, but, I believe those superior bits aren't used as vulkun support is just an alternative for the DX11 features used - none of vulkuns fancyness was added.

Edit: comparing vulkan to dx11, dx12 competes better but valheim is a dx11 game.

Vulcan only if it does not run smoothly in normal mode. Vulcan is for better fps on weaker systems by the cost of grafics beauty.

I found Vulkan API keeps causing my game to freeze after a while of play, which messes up progress. It does seem to add a few more FPS but ... each of my plays that have 'bugged' it was on Vulkan and not once on Dx.

Try it out and see how works, at the worse it may not launch then you simply use Dx instead.
