two-handed or sword and board?
Howdy, I'm upgrading from bronze to iron and I figured I might try an iron battleaxe but the 20 blocking power causes me to doubt it; not to mention two-handed is probably a bit slower than the sword/board I've been using, which has proven to be quite reliable.
Any input is welcome, thanks.

Shields remain grossly overpowered throughout the game, and more enemies have slash resistance than blunt resistance, so if you're interested in the easy option then the answer is using clubs with the smaller line of shields

I'm a spear main, but I carry the sledge as a secondary weapon. Very handy in the swamp, but I rarely pull it out anywhere else. I play mostly solo now though. Co-op is a different story. Having a weapon with a large AOE can be really useful in cramped quarters because you can attack from behind someone who has a shield.

Here's your answer VVHave you tried the sword yet? I was sticking with maces for awhile then built a sword. It is so much better. Swings faster and uses way less stamina so you get more swings. I never really like a two-handed weapon, my go-to is always bows, maces, and rounded shield so I can parry rather than tower shield because parry will stun or staggering the enemy and in this stage, the enemy received backstab damage which multiplies the damage.
Thank you for answering, this is my exact answer to his question.the problem with the sword is that only can be useful in bronce age and black metal age ( or end game ) , because maces do top damage on swamp/mountain mobs because blunt damage type , in plains a frostner is more of a defensive weapon that slow and push a lot groups of evil yodas , but there a BM sword is very welcome too one time u have the mats to make it tier 4 Have you tried the sword yet? I love Frostner, it does a lot of damage to any monsters when raining because they're got wet debuff which makes Frostner more effective especially in Swamp.
As far as I know, there are no swords with elemental effects except Silver Sword but it's for one or two specific monsters only. The spirit damage is only good for Wraith or Ghost while Frostner has no limitation.
Just parry their attacks and when they got stunned or staggering they got backstab damage which multiplies our damage, in that way they die quicker no matter what weapons did you use except for tower shield users you lose the ability to parry.I know the mace does more damage but you get more swings with the sword. Except for skeletons I find everything dies quicker with the sword. the problem with the sword is that only can be useful in bronce age and black metal age ( or end game ) , because maces do top damage on swamp/mountain mobs because blunt damage type , in plains a frostner is more of a defensive weapon that slow and push a lot groups of evil yodas , but there a BM sword is very welcome too one time u have the mats to make it tier 4

sledges and atgeirs are good for 2 handed , not the battle axe because is sooo slow , sledge is not that slow and have 8m AoE attack in all their normal hits with a good stagg
atgeir special attack have 7m AoE and a lot of stagg/push , and their normal hit do a lot of pierce damage but only can attack 1 enemy ( it uses like a spear in that way , not like a polearm , swords and maces are more like that , short polearms because have a wide 4.5m 140º-160º normal attack ranges , plus using a rounded shield saves your life a lot )

I'd suggest mace for the swamp just for getting it up a bit for the boss fight. The silver sword is one of the best in the game and you can get that after the swamps.
Either way I would prefer that over a two-handed weapon myself. The timing of those types of weapons really makes me feel out of control of my character.

I was more or less musing before; if you're just going into the swamps the last thing you want is a battleaxe. Make it later. You need to make a bunch of poison resist and use them before you get poisoned. Maybe upgrade your bronze mace/shield; you absolutely need a mace to kill those dam blobs/oozes. Kill leeches with a bow so you can safely
go in the water.
I think the first thing I made in iron was the huntsman bow. Nice bow.

The primary attack, a wide swing , is quite slow and requires some timing to get it right.
The secondary attack is a jab like the atgeir and is fast.
You can chop down trees with it.
It's fun to try but I ended up using a sword because it's so much faster and blocking with
a shield is more effective.
You might as well make one unless you're concerned about how much iron you
have or need. Looks good hanging on a wall.
