There is another piece smaller than the rock destructable that you place and then mine out the ones you don't want. I found that the totem stand is smaller and you can hide it in a pillar completely.

Take a fir tree, use the top of it's anchor point as the start of the top of your pyramid, work downwards from there.

I like the height/construction/stability limit thing, it makes structures have some semblance of structure rather than having 10 mile high skyscrapers or floating blocks.
