I drop 1 per, just to keep them 'happy' and wait for the births to start and go back and recheck as I'm doing other farm chores. When the pen/enclosure has reached it's maximum occupancy[~12ish], I stop feeding until I cull some of the herd back down to my starting default of 4 boars per enclosure.

i toss the stack and they eat one at a time, i find the red mushrooms are better for getting them to breed plus berries can be used in different recipes in the crock pot for better buffs
You will regret throwing mushrooms away when you get further along. Save them for wolf skewers.

They eat them one at a time. It's safe to throw stacks at them.

Keep in mind though that boars only breed when you are in range, but will still eat while you are gone. Thus you could throw them a stack and leave and come back and they only have 1 or 2 piglets, while having eaten all your berries.

What Damnion said- its best to just toss 4 berries or carrots at your breeding pair of pigs and then stick around doing base stuff till they have 3 piglets, to avoid wasting food.
