I'd like some feedback
Hi Vikings, i'd like to ask a few questions about server hosting regarding rules and events for a server. I'm not trying to advertise the server I have, I just want to ask some questions about how you feel about certain rules, events, and other things that we should or shouldn't do in a typical vanilla survival setting.
1. How do you feel about a rule that imposes exploration based off of sequence breaking? For example: If the players have not killed Elder yet, the players should be not allowed to be near Plains for any reason.
2. How do you feel about a rule that requires public portals?
For example: All portals must be accessible to all players. They must not be behind a Warded Door, or anything of the like.
3. What kind of events should we try in Valheim? I'm trying to think of something other than Javelin, or Fishing.. any ideas?

Well thanks for the event ideas at least.
Maybe you just got unlucky. I've played on and hosted enough community servers to tell you that if you tell people they can't go places because they didn't kill something; you won't have a very successful server.

1) I think you should create any rules you'd like for your sever. I personally don't like the idea of limiting exploration.
2) Again with your server your rules. Again , I think this is a silly requirement.
3)
a) Scavenger hunt would be cool, something with clues (signs) and waypoints and particular items. start and end points.
b) Long boat races : everyone gets their own boat, set a destination etc
c) Cart pull race
d) PVP Colosseum bloodsport
e) Wood cutting, first to get a full cart back to base.
etc etc

personally i don't like prohibitive rules. i'd like to come at it with an attitude of "let's do this thing" rather than "let's NOT do this thing". in general i feel it leads to more creativity and less punishment. it also depends on whether you want your rules followed or not.
so for example restating rule 1 as: "players should make their best attempt to stay within biomes of bosses they have defeated or are working to defeat" or something to that effect. i could abide by that. but if you told me i'm 'not allowed' in the plains until later, i'm going to do everything in my power to get there sooner. and for some ppl that sort of rebellion may not even be consciously set out upon.

Hello :)
1: people should be abel to go to any biodomes they want if they want to.
2: Well Portals should be to a major hubs like towns that are for all. You can do a build in on your end, so they dont acess to your base.
3: Logs in water is always fun to event with, jumping on them and try not to get wet :)

Only rule i can think of is using bugs to piss off other players. (not pvp btw)
Or sinking a boat in middle of ocean on purpose with other players on it.
Players should be allowed to go everywhere. As some skilled players can easy skip 1.st boss and go direcly on second by using a troll to mine for them, for example.
Players should also have their private portals. But you must share your cores with others (trading) for gold as some of them may be unlucky with dungeons and have a hard time getting off 1.st island.
Portal from 1.st island --) to black forest is fine, but more than this is newbie help :D
As for events --- Maybe a Lox race? I am sure you can build a racing road in plains.
(if you dont like plains -- deep north is empty)
Hunting challange -- player with most deep meat/tropys/hides wins gold.
Tropy challange -- players hunt for the rare monster tropys (werewolf one, ghoust in swamp one, icegolem one, big goblin one)
Stupid house -- build the weirdest building you can by limited materials on pile (must be liveable with fire and roofed)
Iron/silver challange -- find iron/silver without using detection devices (no you cant use hammer :D)

If you set up some rule like "you shouldn't go to plains bleh bleh" then if the person decided to go yolo solo and die in a bad place then they should expect to not get any help getting their gear back either. I think that would be punishment enough. Basically "go ahead and do dumb things but don't drag others into it" kind of attitude.
In terms of public portals it really depends on the type of game you are running. I am a believer that the person running the server is basically God and their rules are whatever.
That said it would be difficult in a role play type server to force people to make all portals public. If in a setting where the rules want people to stay together in one town basically and work as a team all the time I could understand forcing public only portals.
Sailboat racing obviously.
Target shooting from moving boat through a course.
Disk golf.
All in all I am personally not fond of rules and just put rules I would be ok with in general. I would never have rules like that on a server though since i don't want to play policeman and kick people etc

1 . Players should be able to go anywhere.
2 . Player Portals should still be locked to said player, maybe you could have npc portals?.
3 . Cheaters banned from server, .. Dev commands locked / Avatar locked to server ( so no porting in with items).
