Do the major location and enemy updates apply to old seeds?

I'm reluctant on starting a new world, on the other hand i do want the new content. So i thought, will restarting the game on the exact same seed spawn the new updates, or it needs to be a completely freshly generated seed/map which will have these updates implemented in them?

also, is creating a new Character on the same map counts as "new wolrd", because... well for him it is a new world...?

In general, a zone (64mx64m block) on the map becomes "created" (landscape and contents calculated and generated) once any part of it comes close enough to be on your minimap, even if that zone doesn't actually get "revealed" on the map. Such zones that were created before the appropriate update will not have any of the new stuff (because they already exist), but zones that have not already been generated have the possibility to (because they don't actually exist yet).

tl;dr: If your existing map hasn't been too heavily explored already, then it's still possible to get the new content by exploring areas you haven't gotten to yet. Otherwise, it's only possible by either starting a new world or using a mod.
+1 totally confirm this i avoided Mountains prior to H&H update and now Moder is in my nearest high Mountain biome with Other goodies nearby... i did compare my seed to an online world seed viewer and yes things in my world moved a bit from the original seed due to my sailing and wandering into some swamps

Edit: Ok, I think we need to discern between WORLD and SEED. A seed is... just a seed, a string of letters and numbers that can be used to generate a world.

A world is the actual world you play in that was generated according to a specific seed. In order to get the most out of the frost cave update, I generated a NEW WORLD with the SAME SEED as my old world.

I hope this makes it clear.

Awesome! This helped a lot. Maybe i'll do the same when im done with the bronze age progression

Here is the info from the pinned FAQ:

"Will new content be added to my world I currently are playing on?

New content such as tar pits, mountain caves and Mistlands in the future will not appear in areas that have been already generated. Areas are generated 300-500 meters from a player's location. "Exploremap" and "resetmap" has no effect."

Characters and worlds are separate. You can take existing characters to new worlds, you can create new characters on old worlds, etc. All world changes like buildings or farm patches exist for the new character, but they will have an empty map. Crafting recipes and inventory are tied to the character, regardless of what world they are currently in.

Hope this helps!
