Upcoming hardcore mode without portals
I'm curious about the upcoming hardcore mode with the option to disable portals and maps entirely. This is simultaneously compelling and terrifying to me, because I am heavily dependant on portals, but I think portals take away from the experience of the game, while at the same time making it less frustrating.
Landing on a new island, especially a for a new biome, is the most dangerous time: you're likely to have low rest and day-time left, and low muscle-memory for dealing with creatures. For instance, 2-star goblins can 1-shot you in mountain gear, and at night you're not prepared for them.
How do people do this without portals? I'm tempted by the challenge, but I think I would have to rethink my entire play style (and it would take much longer of course).
Need advice from the absolute gamer chads here. The folks who speedrun and do Mistlands naked.

? You can just bring the mats for everything in a longboat that you might need (EA forge) and still be able to repair? I dont think that will change with hardcore? No portals is not hard really, it's just time consuming.
It is way great for immersion. There is no sailing somewhere with the bare minimum, set a portal and go sleep in your bed. You do have to make camps, find food, etc. Weapon durability becomes very important too since they are not trivial to repair.
I did a few no portals playthroughs but mistland kind of killed it for me. This biome is so tedious and unenjoyable I have no desire to really "survive" in it in a no portal run.
Did I say otherwise? Of course you brings mats with you nut first you need to remember and plan well. Second there is point where really advance gear needs leveled up workstation. That's all.
It also means that going for multi day expeditions shouldn't be taken lightly.
No map is a no go for me. I tried it and honestly the landscape is not varied enough to enable good navigation. I know some do it, more power to them. Doesn't work for me. Not enough landmarks.

first off :
its not a real "hardcore" mode as while you can die and lose your gear and skills for good you wont lose your bases or other world progress like boss kills. devs said this was due to multiplayer hardcore runs and deleteing the world because 1 guy died feeling not fair to them.
plus you can enable and disable this setting on demand at anytime when loading up the world.
also 2 star goblins do NOT oneshot you in mountain gear unless you wear fenris armor (in which case you shouldnt get hit to begin with as thats the entire point of fenris advantage) aslong as you have the standard melee food combo aka 2 hp 1 stamina food running. if you got oneshot in full wolf armor your food was simply either terrible or running out and you didnt reeat before going for combat.
also : there is no good reason ever to land at a new landmass at night. thats asking for trouble. as its alot easier to just fend off 1 single serpent then whatever can spawn at night on land. so you can just wait on the ship till daybreak offshore.

No portals?, i guess the nomad life is the way. Get what you need, go to places. Sounds about like what i did in other survival games for the fun of it, never build anything besides basic shelter.

Like other say, it's mainly time consuming. It punishes you the most if you're careless and unprepared, otherwise, taking it slow and taking precautions is the best way to proceed. It's really not something that most people would necessarily enjoy, as the game is balanced around portals due to the sheer scale of the map, along with it's other mechanics. I think it'd be alright to try it once at least, though you do need some time and patient on your hands.
And Mistlands will most likely be a problem, i'm not a 100% how people do navigate it, but i'd imagine using the wisp torches, smoke from the fire and "breadcrumb" trails are some.

I've been doing no-portal, no-map for months, and I wont go back. It's a totally different game. It's not for everyone, maybe not for most, but it's not at hard as you might think at first, once you get use to it.
As one poster mentioned, you do pretty much build a base every day if you're traveling. 5 walls, two roof parts, a bed, and a fire is all you need unless it's raining. Then you need at least another roof part to cover the fire and one or two walls to block the wind. Those "bases" end up getting scattered all over the map and make useful markers in addition to safe spots when you're traveling.
When you get horribly lost, it's a great feeling to spot one of your mini-bases and know that, you may not know exactly where you are, but you know you've been there before and you are likely to find your way back soon.
In any case, you can try it now if you want. Just '/noportal', '/nomap', and go.
I think someone also mentioned Mistlands with noportal/nomap. It is by far the worst. You walk 10 meters into it and you're lost. You can wander around in there for day without knowing where you are.
I like to pickaxe into a high rock, build a fire, and drop a bed in the hole to get through the night, but there's very little wood, so it's not uncommon to get stuck standing in a some hidy-hole that you found the whole night without a bed or fire, and with a Gjall flying around above you.
And the next night your pickaxe wears out... Great fun!

If I'm going on a long journey (looking for the next biome, etc), I do pack the mats for the benches, cauldron, and upgrades, but it takes a significant portion of even the longboat storage, and that's not even including the mistlands tables, which I haven't tried to travel with yet.
If/when you need to fix some weapons/armor, and/or make some more food, you plan at least a day, likely multiple to put it all together and tear it all down again.
Sometimes you need/want to make a temporary farm as well, which, of course, is several days.

When you get as far as Mistlands (like Vinyl was talking about), it's no longer "just a forge." Upgrades are needed to maintain your gear, and the Black Forge and Galdr Table are needed if you've got Mistlands gear to think about. Keeping track of everything that will be needed is a pain, and loading it all onto a boat becomes cumbersome. The alternative it to set up semi-permanent outposts everywhere.? You can just bring the mats for everything in a longboat that you might need (EA forge) and still be able to repair? I dont think that will change with hardcore? It's more of a challenge than you think. Give a "no portals" run a try, and you'll see what he means when you start doing Mistlands stuff.

You can enable noportals and nomap already through console commands, the update will only make that avilable in the UI.
I've recently completed a full noportal run, its neat at first but wears on you toward the end.
Its actually not that big of a deal, you dont build big bases and thats it.
Farming is probably the biggest issue. Because playing normally you often come back to base and do farms on the side. Now you can be away for a week, and literally just wait for stuff to grow with nothing else to do.
Also while you have a base you still take some resources with you on journeys so you can repair stuff etc. As for dangerous fights, instead of a portal you place a bed. Worst is when you return and forget to reset spawn. Noportals definitely is interesting by creating new issues.
Once i died stupidly and respawned in random empty plains village (with no gear, food, anything). Took a while to find black forest (through plains and swamps) to get a dear and make a raft, then climb mountain with campfires to get my body haha.
But overall frankly if you run light (no overgathering, no overbuilding), its barely slower than with portals. They are luxury that makes us lazy.
Nomap sounds fun, and tree based navigation should be cool, but alt tabing to drawing tablet to make own maps and/or make screenshots seems a bit immersion braking . Just fipping a switch to block map is the lest significant part of making nomap into actual sensible gamemode.

I started a No Map No Portal run, because I hadn't tried it yet. No map is the harder of the two. But, I'm still hanging out near the black forest, reluctant to leave my cozy base and go out into the world....I mean I found a wild maypole and everything. I made paths all over the starting island so I wouldn't get lost. Still got turned around once when I stepped off the path to hunt deer.
Navigating by bed was an interesting experience. It's a build piece that points in a definite direction. Acts as a compass, necessary for finding the Elder. You end up off course a bit though while dodging obstacles when you're walking. And if you stop in a random building along the way, you gotta drop the bed at whatever angle it's at so you don't get turned around.

The server I'll be starting Saturday will have strict portal restrictions (admin-built-only, and only after a lot of exploration). It's my hope that the players do exactly that. Build many bases, and (on larger continents) networks of highways for heavy Cart usage. (And using the SpeedyPaths mod to make said roads more useful than vanilla.) Without portals, I see myself making a lot more bases. Pretty much one for each days travel.
I do love the convenience of portals, but I've never done a run without them. I can't wait to see what it'll be like.

I think its plenty doable its just going to be more time consuming than most people want to deal with. I mean your going to need to travel to at least two biomes the slow way to grow both plains restricted and mistlands restricted crops, changing your boss buff each time will be a time investment trip, etc. Lots of little things that are just taken for granted people aren't going to think of until they start trying it.
Difficulty wise though...other than not having the map its just a matter of tweaking priorities. Instead of landing and building a portal your going to need to land and build a small sheltered bed asap. I don't think any zone is particularly threatening to an experience player going into it prepared. ♥♥♥♥ will happen occasionally of course but really the lack of portals isn't going to increase the challenge so much as just increase the time investment. Getting lost without a map though...that might make things interesting. Navigating by the sun/moon is somewhat doable but they may need to add constellations or something.

I've been playing without portals and I just land my boat in a safer biome (which is usually the meadows) make a base camp, then hike into the swamps and plains from there.
