All the fake "realism" in this game and there's still so many completely ridiculous unrealistic things.
Everything takes stamina. Everything has durability. Every single thing is manual, there's zero quality of life on anything, so you spend hours doing manual labor, farming, fixing, blah blah blah. Fires put out smoke to choke you unless you build chimneys, wood rots in the rain without a thatched roof. There are so many systems tediously designed to make sure that everything in this game is a chore. Every time I start to enjoy the game doing the actual cool stuff, here comes hours of chores that I have to do to prepare to go do cool stuff.
And I could put up with it. I could learn to put up with it even though it feels more like a job than my actual job when i have to sit and do all these chores.
Except the game won't even leave me along long enough for me to sit and farm and build out all these areas to raise animals and crops and all the other stuff I have to do just to have food because your base stats never change. The enemy attacks were so constant that I started using "raise ground" and thousands of stone to built troll high walls so that I could have just a few moments of peace.
Nope. All that BS realism and I just watched a troll swing a log, clip it straight through a wall made out solid stone, and hit every structure behind it. Just straight through the wall. I have built an insane amount of walls, extending them out into the sea, just to pray that the game will leave me tf along long enough to plant some gd carrots and a troll just shows up (despite me being in meadows.) and clips its weapon through my walls, to hit everything on the other side.
I do not see how anyone could possibly enjoy rebuilding the same gd things over and over because the devs think it's fun to just destroy everything you build.

well done, you got the basics of a survival game
especially when the game is per definition "a hard survival game"
i love the way Valheim does its job - just a different way to survive
so maybe Valheim is not your cup of coffee because it does things in ways a "normal" survival game would not
nothing needs to be done fast, no rush and no hunt for epics
one has to take some time, but got rewarded with epic scenes on every corner
and most important is the fact
Valheim is still under development

Sounds like this isn't your kind of game. Honest advice, don't sink your time into something you're not enjoying. Find something you have fun playing.

That's what I have been basically trying to say as well. Maybe it's possible for the game to detect that troll X with attack Y has hit a set of walls of an height of Z and that height Z was large enough that attack Y should only affect/damage a single structural object (like the first one it hits). But I really don't know how difficult it would be to program that. It might be super hard for an issue that is easily avoidable in the future by doing what has been suggested here. while the clipping is defiantly a frustrating thing, its something that's prevalent in nearly all games.
Ark, survival evolved show cases how much of a joke it can truly be. Developers do the best they can, but there is no realistic system that sees the surface and player or NPC objects interacting with a solid object accurately.
For now, us players have to adjust to the sometimes maddening clipping issue in some games. maybe in the future a game engine will come out that can accurately simulate this. but for now. [...]
And as I've said too, the game is actually quite forgiving regarding material consumption and rebuilding things. (If we're talking realism, why does repairing your gear not require resources? I don't see OP complaining about that...) From what I know >everything< in the game completely refunds its materials, doesn't matter if it's destroyed by attacks or destroyed using a hammer. The only exception known to me so far are spiked walls (they only return their wood upon destruction, not their core wood though).
OP could have easily used the time that it took him to write his rant to simply deconstruct/destroy his single existing forge, replace it where it's needed, rebuild the sconce (with the 100% materials he should have gotten back from the one the troll destroyed), then deconstruct the forge again and replace it where it's originally been. So it's only a matter of time before someone here will tell him to "git gud".

its a replay. i done most everything with my first. so doing everything over.
and thank you as well. it has been a pain gathering all the stone needed since i don't have the ability to break rocks yet.
but i find it fun taking my time. gathering everything I need before I go into the black forest.
i made sure that this time around. I'm doing mostly base building and showcasing it while i stream. might bore others though lol
@Ailes
yeah. i truly wish game engine's could detect it properly. there are some games that come close, but in the end, there are ways to clip through anything.
wishing for that game engine to be made some day. i bet it happens when computers change over to new quantum setup. since that seams to be the next type of computer to come out.

The troll log swing is three 4x4 floor pieces. He does not damage garden items so I ring my base in garden. You can make quite large bases that are protected by ditching all around and workbenches throughout to stop spawns. Yes it takes time but when you are done it works well. Might have an occasional issue with Cold Wind from the Nortrh at some point but otherwise you are golden. You can even double ditch if Plains event is bothersome.
Sleep at night. In the meadows nothing much bothers you during day unless your base abuts BF. Make your ditch on trouble side first.

a lot of this is self inflicted by fighting the game instead of rolling with its ruleset.
You are going all in, and that is great, but a bit of laziness goes a long way in these games. A chimney? Try putting the fire on the top floor instead. Raising animals? Its amusing, but WHY? Early game, deer and pig are plentiful and mobs leave the meat all over the place to just pick up. Late game, a portal to a lox spawn & a few shots refills you for days --- the new xbow takes off half its health on a sneak attack. And ML, the most common enemy drop food meat.
Other issues are similar... fixing wood from water damage?? Let it rot (it stops at 50%)... such structures are for utility. Across the board, you are doing everything 'right' but you are putting in 10x the effort needed as doing it 'right' isnt any more effective than taking the easy route. I mean, 99% of the time honey and grilled meats are all I fool with for food. Only if in the hardest zone I can handle do I use better. I get burned, if the wolf pack finds me before I can get to safety, but I would rather die once a week than spend 3/7 of the week growing food...

Trolls have a range of like 10 feet. Don't build your structures literally touching the wall that's defending it.
For everything else, I recommend mods.

Are you basing in/near Black Forest? Trolls shouldn't show up in Meadows. I've done plenty of farming and outside of one or two raids they never harassed me.

Trenches work better than walls. Leave some room around the edges to account for log AOE and thrown boulders. I pretty much never need to rebuild my base, just maybe repair a few things around the edges. Don't ever put your garden close to the edge.
Also, mods. Valheim Plus can remove a lot of the tedium, or even make mobs stronger if that's your thing. (Obligatory warning: Devs are not responsible if mods mess up your game. Make backups.)

That's BS though. I have to worry about rain rotting an uncovered dock, and manually put every single thing into chests when I get back and click the "craft" button 400 times when I want to build more than one of something and still have to wait on the craft timer and manually plant every single carrot and manually pick every single carrot, and build actual scaffolding to be able to build high because the snap-placement system is designed to be as tedious as possible, and literally had to build two pickaxes just to have enough durability to be able to mine out like half the copper in a vein because the devs are obsessed with durability... I have to be constantly living in this "a real viking life would be tedious af, so this one is too!" Trolls have a range of like 10 feet. Don't build your structures literally touching the wall that's defending it.
For everything else, I recommend mods.
But they can't program the game to not let trolls literally just clip through walls?
The troll broke a lighting sconce. I have been upgrading my gear, so I literally don't have the copper to build a forge out here at this gate so that I can RE-build the sconce the troll broke. HEAVEN FORBID I be able to build the sconce at the forge I already have and just place it, like literally any other game or even real life. Nope. Gonna have to either break my forge, rebuild it out here, replace the sconce that broke, then rebuild my forge again back at my base, or I'm going to have to drag a cart out, mine copper, smelt it, and then build a temp forge again JUST to be able to put back a f*ing wall light that got broken by a weapon that clipped through a damn wall.
Look at that insane list of BS I'm going to have to go through to rehang a simple light because trolls just get to clip through walls and the game won't even let me just plant some gd carrots in peace.
And if a game NEEDS mods to not be trash, the devs need to rethink what they're doing.

The forge you have should refund all its materials if you destroy/deconstruct it. Just temporarily relocate it, then put it back to where it originaly was. It's a... questionable system that you can't build something at the existing one and like carry it to where it needs to be. But it's not like you have to do everything from scratch again. You're somewhat exaggerating.
And even if you don't feel like replacing the existing forge, this is your motivation to get some reserve copper that you are perhaps wise to have anyway. After I upgraded my bronze gear I went outside one more time with a karve or longship and filled it to the brim with copper and now a troll could do to me what he did to you tons of times over.
How did you build the sconce the first time around? It must mean you must have had a forge near there at least once. Why did you use up the bronze from that forge? I'm sorry, but if you are so notoriously low on bronze, then that's perhaps on you, at least partly so.
And regarding future trolls, just extend the distance with spikes, trenches/ditches, more walls... I don't know... I would take this as an inspiration and motivation for other building projects... not sure why you're this pissed at that. Maybe it's the wrong game for you if you hate some unforseen things happening. I'll agree that a troll glitching its weapon through walls is a rather poor reason... but come on, calm down and just get to it... learn from that for the future when building something... and then move on... I'm not a dev myself, but it might be just too hard to adjust the reach of the troll per-se or or of its weapon in different circumstances. Maybe they could somehow make it that when hitting a certain kind of material or a certain height of walls that only the initial piece of structure takes damage... Dunno... Maybe they'll fix that one day. But if not then it's not like the world is collapsing from you having to adapt to that a little.

This one is not a problem. Rain only brings it to half durability. Water damage will never break it. It's just a cosmetic issue. (One that mods can fix.) That's BS though. I have to worry about rain rotting an uncovered dock...
The devs are trying to play a balancing act between people who want more challenge and people who want less. It is impossible to please everyone. (Don't believe that anyone wants more grind? Some people advocate for no portals and deliberately look for maps where everything is spread out. On person's grind is another's content.)

would suggest making allowance's for the issue and build your place with the advice given above.
me, I flatten an area then build a trench outside it. I also try and build on a mountain/hill type. flatten the top. leaving steep walls. then dig my trenches around that.
have found that approach very effective, but time consuming.
this is my current build. i cant make trenches yet, but you can see the plan i have. this might give you some ideas for your own game.
