Unless you're blind, Darkwood building pieces are a different set of models. If you think Darkwood rooftops for example, are the same as Wooden rooftops with a different colour pallete, I implore you to look again.

Thus, your analogy that the 'new car' is just the same car with a different colour is wrong. The better analogy is that Ford made a red Mustang GT350, then later, released a Mustang GT350R and painted it with orange racing stripes.

How do you add an expansion to a game that isn't completed yet?

The new Mountain caves patch has very recently been released.

Other than that, no expansion.

If you are talking about the that whole timeline that the devs spoke of early on, that was sadly scrapped. Mistlands is now the current awaiting update. For that, i would say May?

I was pretty spot on with the mountains update timing.

OP, post when you last played and what you expected when you decided to come back. The hostility is due, in almost its entirety, to players who didn't seem to understand what an early access game is. Not specifically towards you.

I would suggest you scroll up and hit the news tab and check out the latest patch notes to see if there is anything you consider worth coming back for.

The most recent update added quite a bit but if you are unwilling to start a new world and have your world to the last boss you probably won't notice much change.

Only you know what you want.

And new loot drops in the caves, Stuff like fishing poles can drop now from what I hear.

The revamping of food and locking some things behind more food cooking upgrades really have a big impact on progression... but again if you are unwilling to start a new character you won't really appreciate all the work that was done.
