I got lucky and the early cloud save was just enough. I did lose a bunch of food but my base was still there and the crypts I mapped out in the swamp showed up again when I hit my cartography table. Still I wasn't in the regular save camp at first because I like the punishing deaths but after that I don't know maybe normal saves are the way to go.
