Can I convert a single player map to a multiplayer one?

I've got a single player server some friends and I have been using - but I have to be logged in for them to play.

We are thinking about expanding access to them, and a few friends of friends have indicated they want to come play.

If we can't, we can't, but I am hopeful there is a way to copy our progress over and run an online server with it....

is it possible? And if so - how?!

Get a dedicated server - they're not that expensive - and move your map there (there's instructions on how to do that online). Then your friends can play even when you're offline. My brother-in-law and I did that and it's always a lot of fun to log on, look around, see how, suddenly, everything in our main base looks different and go "oh ... someone went on another building spree ..." :D Like, you leave Monday and there's still wooden palisades and you log on again a week later (cos you're too busy to play more) and suddenly, there's that huge-ass stone wall around the base.
So you need to pay money for those? Any idea how much/often?
The one my brother-in-law and I are on is 35 GBP (British pounds) for 3 months.

A modern PC should be sufficient to both host and client the game. I have a prefab desktop from 2017 and I could host 5 clients no probs.

If you have a spare PC lying about you can use that (friend of mine set one up our first play through). If you rent one all you do is connect, they take care of the set-up, at least my provider did. If you set up your own box there are instructions online. Probably best to run the sever on a PC other than the one you are playing on if you hope to host a few friends.

Yes, Check the Server Box before starting a game. (For friends to Join) Or check Community Server for anyone to join. (Not recommended you will get griefers)
