While this is a pretty strong message, it's not one I ENTIRELY agree with. A mod developer should be allowed to ask for a OPTIONAL payment (say, for purchasing new assets for future mod updates/mods or to show support to the mod creator). I will agree however that MANDATORY payments are something I don't agree with (the creation club is a prime example of what gave a extreme backlash about paid mods).
Some mod developers make it their actual jobs to create mods and the code that goes into them so I can understand why they would charge like they do, even if it isn't what the developers want.
Unfortunately, it's ultimately between the game developers and the modders themselves as to what they believe is right by their standards so regardless of what messages others put, even messages by the developers, they will continue to charge so long as it gets them a income for their mod.
It will be up to the community and the developers to handle this in the future.

Anyone's free to ask for patronage and donations, that's not locking anything behind a paywall. Nothing ties the money to the software for legal purposes. Just don't put functionality behind donation tiers, that turns it into a shop.
Almost zero mod coders try anything like that in any case.
Honestly I can't see a way IG could have taken a less controversial position here.

But it should always be optional. The content they make is for a game that isnt theirs. So they dont have any rights to it in my mind. If someone wants to donate out of their free will. thats good. But paywalling it is bad. and should be banned. I agree with the devs stance on this.
