if you use pvp, be sure to toggle it off again, as you can hurt other tames when battling mobs with them

Exactly, just use the Butcher Knife, it's a lot more controllable.

You don't need a special tool, you just need to turn off friendly fire.

You can also enable PVP by hitting tab and clicking on the two swords side by side in the upper right. The swords will cross allowing damage.
