Best method for getting the trophies is a passive one. If you aren't digging out around the fire jets to where its just water around the jets where the surts spawn, do so. That'll auto kill them when they spawn and you can just go every once in a while around those spawners and collect the drops. Eventually you'll get trophies. More you check the spawns the more your chances for em.

Thus no need to actively try to kill them so to speak.

I've picked up two out of a single drowned surtling spawner. It has killed more than a hundred by now judging by the coal and cores I get out of it. So a 5% drop rate actually sounds a bit high to me, but maybe I'm running on the low side of rng too.
